Hmmm... When I toggle the folder button, it shows the folder list pane on the left or closes it, but I don't see a thumbnail image anywhere? I seem to remember that the 'View as web page' option in the win98 WE would show a small thumbnail in the bottom left, but again that option no longer exists in the menu.

Maybe I've got something else toggled 'off'?

Guess I'm just used to Black Ice which was a 'click the level of security and leave it alone' deal.
As for making it more confusing, I understand when it's asking about the programs trying to get out to the net and have let it create rules for those, just not sure on the incoming... seems I had a lot of Ips trying to get in at one point and denied them... seems to have settled down now. (BTW, I'm a computer analyst... we're SUPPOSED to make things more confusing <chuckle!>)

Must be different than win98 then. Have a feeling my thumbnailing may be turned off as well, question is where <sigh>. Only thing I see re: thumbnails now is "View thumbnails" which shows ALL files as thumbs... ech!

I seem to remember seeing a place where you could change that, just can't remember where (again I could be thinking about Win98 again). Also, I've installed StyleXP so it might be overriding any ability to mess with the icon text (since it uses themes too). No biggie. just wondering.

To see the thumbnail in WE in XP, toggle the folder button, highlight an image file, and make sure the details box on the bottom left side is open.

If you double click a standard image file - jpeg. bmp, etc the image appears in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer - various options including slide show of all image files in the folder. Quite handy at times.

Highlight a folder - Toggle folder button to show only folder content and on tool bar select thumbnails from Views dropdown list.

I also have StylesXP, slightly modified, but I never use the thumbnail option, nor do I worry about text color (default is white) on my backgrounds, which tend to be darker anyhow.
I tried with a white background, and other than the shadow on the text, it does become unreadable...not sure how to change that, sorry, I looked.

Yeah, I know about that 'thumbnail' option in the View menu that shows each file as a thumbnail AND that each file opens up in a viewer. Not what I was hoping/looking for though (when the folder pane was closed AND 'View as web page' was checked ON in the 'View' menu, win98 WE used to just show a small icon in the bottom left corner of the WE window when you highlighted any image file name in the list. Was just convenient to not have to open them up in separate windows and cover your desktop. Doesn't look like this exists anymore.

<Scratching head > Sorry, I'm just not following... let's see if we're even doing the same thing:

1-When I toggle the 'Folders' button in WE on the 'Standard Buttons' toolbar it opens/closes the left side (window pane) which has a list of all the folders: are you saying I should have that list open or closed? (or is it even that part of the window you are talking about)

2-When I highlight an image I don't see anything appear anywhere whether the left 'folder' pane is open OR closed.

3-Which 'details box on the bottom left side' are you talking about? MAYBE that's what I'm missing (perhaps it's toggled 'off' somewhere/somehow?), because I don't see anything there... only the folder list appears on the left side.

    Thx,

    To turn OFF the firewall:
XP Firewall is enabled by default. Disable by
    Control Panel/Network Connections/Local Area Connections/General/Properties/Advanced

XP firewall only blocks outbound info

    Mike:
In WE, toggle the folder until you see the blue dialog boxes on the left. They say "What do you want to do?" and give you one click choices. If you see your files and folder tree, you are on the wrong one. Highlight an image file (say, jpg or bmp) then look at the bottom left corner. You may have to open the box that says "details" if it is shut.

Am I explaining this well enough? I have XP pro- and I don't know if it is diff in home. Oddly, I use home at work, but I don't remember if it's the same.

    Is this for sure ?

I was under the strong impression that XP Firewall only blocked INBOUND attempts.

Sorry, BB, you are right...guess I'm tired tonight. XP firewall only blocks incoming traffic. I keep mine disabled (it's worthless anyway!) and use other software for a firewall. Getting ready to network my kids' comps, then I guess the router will be sufficient.
    Cheers from Ohio!

I FOUND the problem... in "tools; folder options; general;tasks "

I had my folders set to 'use window classic folders'
    NOT
    'show common tasks in folders'

Actually I don't like the latter, too busy I find... so I'll just keep the classic. At least NOW we know we're not both losing it! <chuckle>

    Thx,

    Re: Simple File Sharing

This is one place (of many) where XP-home & XP-pro are different.

Pro will give you the option to use simple file sharing or not. They recommend that you do but that's only because it has fewer features and thus isn't as confusing as the full file sharing option is. But there are good things you just can't do with the simple option.

Home does not give you the choice. It can only do simple file sharing.

Doesn't appear to be a specific way to change the color of the text, but you can place a box color of your choice around the text:

    Desktop-->Properties-->Desktop-->Color (lower right-hand corner)

Has the ability to change font color (in classic mode) on the XP desktop.

I havent read the entire post, since its three pages long, so what i am going to say is a little off-topic and may be a little redundant. Mikenowo mentioned earlier that they keep one their partition with program files as FAT32 so that DOS can be used to fix it if necessary. This is not possible because DOS is only compatible with FAT16. Maybe this means you're not really using DOS, but rather the 32-bit edition. Either way, I just wanted to make this correction.

Win 9x and Me are compatible with FAT32, but DOS is not. FAT32 first came into existence with Windows 95 Release 2. I even have a textbook to prove it if you dont believe me. BTW, WinNT is the only other OS not compatible with FAT32. FAT16 is the only file system that every Microsoft OS is compatible with.

    How about that...

    OK all kidding arround asisde.

Yes fat16 is the native dos. A fat32 driver was included in I think 5.0 and up so in that sense it is not compliant (in that it had to use a driver). There are some limitations, true. Disk size and of course block drivers written for fat16.

But here (in this thread) the term DOS only meant "OS" not specifically msdos ver.xx.

    Night.....

Say What ?? Clue me in here as to what I am doing wrong ?

All of my 7 of partitions are Fat32 and I have no problems doing any thing with them in DOS.

In fact they are formated by DOS as Fat32.

Are you sure you are not referring to the older DOS not recognizing 32 bit or partitions larger than 2gig ?

    Yes 32bit and over 2gig partitions did arrive with Win95b ( OSR2 )

when i said that dos is only compatible with fat16, i was in fact referring to original dos, not fake dos that comes with windows.
