I'm having trouble opening attachments in Outlook Express 6 that are coming to me as .eml files. I've already gone to Tools, Options, Security, and unchecked "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus," but that didn't make it possible to open these attachments.

    I'm using WINXP home version.

Can someone out there help, please?

So what happens when you try to open them?
    Error messages?
Do you get the "open with" window?

Thanx for responding, Aleekat. I get the "Open Attachment Warning" window. Whether I click "Open it," or "Save it," I get just the headers. (I guess that's what it's called --- forwarding information). Oh, yes, perhaps I should add that these attachments are all "forwards." But with Navigator, that didn't make any difference. Is that the problem with OE?

Maybe the .eml file type is not set in folder options to be opened by OE?

Thanx, Bmoore1129. It's very possible that the folder options are not set up right. I went to Control Panel, Folder Options, File type, but then I didn't know what to do next. Can you help, pls?

In file types, scroll down to EML and click on it. The space at the bottom should say what program opens EML file types.

It should say Outlook Express. If it does not, click on change and the next page allows you to change to OE.

Mmmmmmmm, it does say Outlook Express. When I go further, it says "Application used to perform action: C:\Program Files\OE\MSIMN.exe." Now what???

In your OE Options, General Tab, does it say that OE is your default mail handler?

Here is a place to fix a lot more things than I know how to do.

    Change:

    C:\Program Files\OE\MSIMN.exe

    to:

    C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /eml:%1

If that doesn't help, open OE and check that Western European (ISO) is set as the default encoding for "reading" (Tools - Options - Read - International Settings).

    HTH.

Brett, My "Western European (ISO)" is grey. There was a little box, unchecked, in front of "Use default encoding for all incoming messages," and I put a check in that. Don't know if I should have or not, but I'm going now to see if that made any difference.

Nope, checking that little box didn't help at all.

And I just learned that people are not able to open MY attachments, either. I sent out a Word document that noone was able to get.

I sure hope someone can help me with this. I like OE except for these problems with attachments.

Yeah, that's as it should be. Check that Western European is selected under Fonts too.

    Did you change the path?

Try sending yourself an attachment. See if you can open it. Can I assume alot of the attachments you can't open are forwarded from AOL users?

Should adjusting the path not work, try using Doug Knox's fix (download, unzip, double-click and select Merge).
