I am still experiencing huge problems with scrolling and typing delays in IE (see previous post)...wondering if it could be some setting that got switched in the Advanced Internet Toools Tab? Or a virus? We have Norton, but ya never know. Could someone tell me what should be checked in the advanced tab in tools? IE6/Windows 98, HP 6333 Pavilion, 32x, 64mb...I know, I know...it *****...just help us, please!
    THANKS!

    SpyBot Search & Destroy
Download and install. It will scan for spy/adware, such as keyboard loggers and the like which is seeming to affect you. Let it remove what if finds.
Disable Install on Demand for IE and Others.

It would be easyer if you write down the current settings post here, then use that defaut button on the advanced page

And I suggest turning off anything that autoupdates, including windows-- windows through addremove uninstall critical update notification---

    norton to
just update manualy ---I usualy do once weekly
summerize for us what youve done so far , for instance have you tried the IE repair yet ?

    Good luck

    Thanks, so far...

Thanks, guys, for your suggestions so far...I do have Ad Aware, and have run it several times throughout all of this, to no avail. Would SpyBot be any better/different? I'll give it a try. Also...I've done the following (as far as I recall, anyway):
    Run IE Repair (several times)
    Scanned for viruses
Done the System File Checker and replaced whatever it said I needed
Tried turning on and off auto-complete, smooth scrolling
    Installed IE6
Went into the Registry and followed someone's instructions here on the BBS to delete a key
Went to the Microsoft Help site (suggested here) and followed instructions for removing a registry key
Deleted my Temp File, History and Cookies in DOS mode, as instructed here
    Tried turning Scroll Lock on/off
    Cleaned the mouse
Removed a lot of junque programs, files, etc. taking up room
That's all I can remember...nothing has made a difference so far. I will try turning off Norton, and anything else I find that is auto-updating, although we don't do Windows Update automatically, or anything else I can think of. We have no problem scrolling or typing in OE, or any other programs...just in IE...certain sites are worse (this BB being amog the worst!), some are fairly smooth (comparatively, at least). I don't know what else to tell you. I'll try your suggestions and post back, unless you think of something else first! THANKS BUNCHES!!!!!!!

Yes, it is much more thorough.
Done the System File Checker and replaced whatever it said I needed
That is a statement which will cause a debate. it is not always correct when it says a file is corrupt, unless used regularly, and then maybe. I will hazard a guess that Setupx.Dll was replaced.

Don't have Tweak UI...downloaded SpyBot and ran...nothing...thanks for the link to Google Groups...at least found more things that don't work! I did find I have a HP Pavilion Recovery Disk...should I do that? Will I lose my stuff, like OE Addresses, pics, Favorites, etc. if I don't do the reformat? Or reinstall Windows from somewhere? I don't have just a Windows CD.I'm afraid to mess with wiping out everything!! YIKES! But this is really ridiculous and driving me crazy!!! Also, slow to open Control Panel, My Computer, etc. ???If I type too fast here, it freezes up entirely.
    :(

I looked at the Newsgroup link and someone had posted this link from M$. Maybe some help?
If you decide to do an overlay install of Windows, everything should be left intact. The CD should be able to do that, or you may choose to se the setup files which may be copied into C:\Windows\Options\Cabs.

    " " Norton's Defrag and Norton's System Check" "

I think nortons getting in the way, It is updated isnt it,
have you tried within each norton utility turning off anything that monitors explorer and IE.

Please dont get impatient and format the hard drive,, with most OEM computers the windows cd is on the hard drive, so format
youl never get it going again, you can do an in place reinstall of windows BUT ( I cant say how with the HP recovery disks)
I to have an HP , havent had to do that yet knock on wood.

drewbarbpi has it been suggested yet to go to pasks portal
learn what and how to stop unessesary startups ?

Thanks, again, guys! I have not yet turned off Norton stuff, so I will try that...forgot it was suggested earlier. I won't be reinstalling Windows or messing with reformatting yet, until there's no other option, as both of those scare me...I wouldn't reformat, just use the recovery CD to reinstall programs without reformatting (apparently an option from the CD). I have already tried the registry key thing suggested on the MSN site, but thanks for the link. I looked at the PacsPortal link at work just now, and it looks interesting...when I get home, I'll go back and see what we have running at Start up. Just to clarify...so are you saying that I can reinstall Windows by using the Options/Cabs section's setup files? If I end up having to do that, could you explain exactly HOW that works, as I'm unsure. Thanks so much for your continued support...I am lost on this one!

    Yes, those are the windows setup files. The best way is to use a boot floppy, choosing without CD ROM support. When it is completely booted and you are at the A:\ prompt type this in and press enter;
    c:\windows\options\cabs\setup.exe
It will then do an overlay install, leaving installed programs and hardware drivers intact, correcting any registry problems.
Note: you may have to update DirectX when done if you have updated it yourself. That is one quirk I have noticed about an overlay install, or at least with my system.

OK...husband talked to our server yesterday...they said they happened to upgrade their modem service at about the same time we started having this problem...had him download a new modem driver...they were sure this would fix the problem...NOT. Then I spent over an hour going through the 32 things in our start up menu, and using pacsportal site to help me get rid of many things...two had "x" ratings! Neither of these things has helped, as I am typing blind now. Sad, very sad...what is a "boot floppy" and how, exactly do I reinstall Windows from the cabs setup files? Guess that's my next try. Thanks!

A boot floppy is a floppy disk that can be used to boot up the computer with a dos based operating system. You would insert it into the A drive and turn the computer on.
You can create one yourself by going into Control Panel\Add Remove Programs, click on StartUp Disk and follow the prompts. Or go to Bootdisk's, download the file, double click the file with a floppy in the drive and one will be created for you.
Of course, this is assuming that you have an A: drive.
My previous post tells you how to use the floppy and what to type at the command prompt to initiate windows setup.

Thanks Mark...I figured out there was an advanced version of SpyBot and used it earlier...found 17 things and removed them...seems a bit btter, but we'll see...this site is the worst, though...still firing blanks as I type and creeping along. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all your help!
