Mozilla 1.4 Release Candidate 1 Now Available
    Thursday May 29th, 2003

Mozilla 1.4 Release Candidate 1 began shipping today. mozilla.org is making release candidates of 1.4 available to ensure a high quality product that can replace the Mozilla 1.0 branch as the stable development path. The final version of Mozilla 1.4 should be available shortly.

    Download

    Release Notes

    What's New in Mozilla 1.4 RC 1

    * Mozilla on Windows now has support for NTLM authentication. This enables Mozilla to talk to MS web and proxy servers that are configured to use "windows integrated security ".

    * Mozilla's bookmarks have been overhauled. Bookmarks now include a root level folder, the ability to have two differently named bookmarks pointing at the same location, site icons in the Bookmark Manager and Bookmarks Sidebar, and separators now have support for labels.

    * Composer now supports click and drag dynamic image and table resizing. If an image is selected or if the caret is placed inside a table, eight resizing handles appear and allow to resize the image/table with a simple click/drag/release. In the case of an image, the resizing is done real-time and a semi-opaque shadow of the image at its target size is shown during resizing. A tooltip shows in real-time the target size in pixels, and the relative change in pixels too.

    * Mozilla now has smooth scrolling. It is disabled by default. To enable it, use about:config to add the boolean preference general.smoothScroll with a value of true. To disable smooth scrolling, set the value of the pref to false.

    * Mail now has junk-mail context menu items, a "delete junk mail" menu item and many other usability improvements for junk-mail controls.

    * Pop-up blocking has been streamlined to improve usability.

    * Users can now specify "blank page," "home page," or "Last page visited" for each of first window, new window and new tab.

    * Users can now specify default font, size and color for HTML compose.

    * Image blocking/disabling is now more flexible and users can "view image" to see blocked or not loaded images.

    * Mozilla now has CRAM-MD5 and DIGEST-MD5 AUTH support for SMTP

    * "Launch file" after downloading has been enabled for .exe files

    * As of Mozilla 1.4b, it is possible to build Mozilla for Win32 using GCC. See the win32 build instructions for details.

    * Proxy auto-config (PAC) failover has been implemented

    * Mozilla 1.4 contains thousands of bugfixes, including changes to improve performance, stability, web site compatability, standards support, and usability.

Can you say "Excellent "! ;)

I'm confused. Sled said, "I still like Firebird better." What is the difference between Mozilla and Mozilla/Firebird? I have Mozilla Firebird on my computer. It identifies itself as "Mozilla Firebird 0.6." So what's Mozilla 1.4?

    Hi cybernut,

This thread has information that will be of interest to you regarding the differences in the two browsers:
Mozilla Firebird 0.6 or Mozilla 1.4 Beta.

Mozilla Firebird is a redesign of Mozilla's browser component, written using the XUL user interface language. Mozilla having used the XPFE interface language. Mozilla Firebird (Browser) - Mozilla Thunderbird (Mail) - and Composer, will be available as separate applications, whereas Mozilla is an integrated application, as is Netscape. Development on Mozilla will most likely end with Version 1.4 Final.

Thanks, Ramona. It's sort of like the old Netscape Navigator as opposed to Netscape containing Navigator, Messenger, etc.?

    Hi cybernut,

Yes, that's pretty much it. The new Mozilla Firebird/Thunderbird/Composer will no longer be a suite. However, there will be an option to add the components as extensions...

Uh Oh doesn't like scrolling on some boards. Stops about 1/5 down the page.

    Not a problem in Firebird:p

    Still checking, let you know.

    edit: Thanks for the cookie.

    Hi Ramona

Are you suggesting that this Mozilla bookmarks release can be incorporated into Netscape 7.02 (CK-SillyDog) or do we still have to wait for 7.1?

Any idea how long the wait will be?

Perhaps I'm off base as I haven't a clue about Modzilla and Release Candidate.

Sorry if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

    Hi Welt,
No, definitely not what I'm suggesting... Mozilla 1.4 RC1 is a full Mozilla Release. More stable than beta, but not quite ready for the Final Release.

Netscape 7.1 will be based on the Mozilla 1.4 Final Release, therefore, the Bookmarks improvement will be seen in Netscape 7.1. As far as a release date, "Only the Shadow knows ". It's a well kept secret, and the best guess is soon, probably sometime this summer. If you want to test drive Netscape 7.1, then give Mozilla 1.4 RC1 a try.
