Microsoft has posted a (cumulative) patch for Internet Explorer that fixes all previously discussed security vulnerabilities affecting IE 5.01, 5.5 and IE 6. In addition, it eliminates six newly discovered vulnerabilities.

Thank you, Arie! My homepage had a news flash about it and when I went to my critical updates page there wasn't anything listed to download. Thanks for providing the link. I am all updated now!

I downloaded the patch for my version of IE (5.01) and when it started to install itself I got a message telling me that Win2K is required.

What's up with that? I didn't see Windows mentioned anywhere.

I got the same results. It does not make it very clear until you get to the actual download page. Only there does it show the 5.01 only applies to Win2000. I wonder why it is not for Win98. Could it be MS no longer supports 98???

My Win98SE machine with IE5.5SP2 updated ok. A different Win98SE machine with IE5.01 did not - loaded IE5.5SP2 into it and the MS cumulative patch Q316059 installed ok then. Last I heard, MS was supporting Win98 till June'02; I copied their Win98 updates to CD-R for future use.

I've tried a few times now, but the download button doesn't do anything when I click it. I got an alert from a friend that told me of the problems and gave a link to an example. I clicked and it tells me I'm patched for this problem. I haven't installed a pacth but I don't have activeX enabled on this machine. I read that ActiveX turns web pages into programs that can open your computer to malicious operators so I just leave it disabled. Is this why the download button don't work ? And if I turn it back on to download the patch, will it work?

Blufx . . ., ActiveX can allow nasties into your machine, this patch may/may not fix that; I kept ActiveX on 'prompt me' for awhile, cuz lots of content on webpages needs it, including winupdate, at least for my settings. Yes, if you've the same other security settings I have, then an ActiveX 'prompt' while winupdating should work (see below). I've enabled now, and trust to my firewall and NAV and quick fingers to keep the bad ones out.
Anywho . . .To see if the update took on your machine, click "Help ", click "About Internet Explorer" then look under updates and if Q316059 is listed you're good-to-go. If you have to dwnld
it again, give it >4 minutes to install, cuz it took awhile.
The WINUPDATE page went squirrely for downloads after I downloaded the cumulative security patch onto 2 machines {It wasn't my fault!} and I'm waiting till MS Updates gets right again to finish others.
    Whew I got wordy! 8)

Is it OK to run the patches with my programs running, or do I need to shut everything down like with a regular install?

For the Q316059 update, I had to shut everything else down for it to 'take' then my machine had to munch on it for awhile before asking to restart. 8)

I read this on the About.com Windows Help message board:

Is this talking about the same security patch and has anyone had this happen with ZA after they installed it?

That has been my gripe with ZA before, and caused me to DUMP it.

ZA & BID use undocumented hooks into the OS. When MS updates some system files, things break.

This Q316059 ms sec patch, and other patches so far, have worked on 2 win98se and 1 Me machines with ZA Pro and the free basic ZA all running IE5.5sp2, no probs yet. Have not loaded IE6 on any machine. The old saying "No two machines are alike . . . "
I used ZA tech help for an unrelated problem and got a quick feedback/fix.

I don't think I'll bother with the fix then. The firewall will keep everyone out.

Arie, if you don't mind me asking, what do you use for a firewall?

Regarding system requirements, the Security Update, February 11, 2002 download page says:
I take this to mean that it should install on any OS with IE6, IE5.5 SP2 or IE5.5 SP1 but, for IE5.01 SP2, the patch will only install on Windows 2000 systems.

I guess Microsoft is trying to force you to update to at least IE5.5 SP1 but for whatever reason Win2000 is a special case.

I have the 02-11-02 patch downloaded but I'm sitting on it for a while, like I do with all Microsoft updates, waiting for the dust to settle a bit.

I installed the last IE cumulative patch for IE5.5 Sp2 and IE6 (MS01-058 dated 12-13-01) with all programs closed and antivirus disabled and that's how I'll install this one.

Yes, a very good question, if you don't use ZA, what do your use for a firewall?
I have a cable connection, with 2 computers on line with a Linksys Router....and have encountered some problems that caused me to lower the level of security in ZA.

Arie, if you don't mind me asking, what do you use for a firewall?

    I don't mind....

Right now I use Tiny Personal Firewall, which is free for home use....

I think I'll get a LinkSys router though when I buy a new PC later this year, so then I'll have a hardware firewall....

Arie, I have another question, if you don't mind.....
If I am running both computers thru the Linksys Router, do I really need to run the personal firewall, like Zone Alarm?
