My wife uses an old win98 system and uses OE6 for email. I just bought her a new box with WinXP Home and OE6 and want to transfer her email folders etc. to her new system. Both are connected to a cable router so they can utilize file sharing.

I managed to export her address book and import it to the new machine. When I tried to export messages, it created a file named Outlook.pst. I copied this onto the new machine, then tried to import doing the following in OE6: File, Import, Messages, OE6. This brings me to a screen to select one of two options: "Import mail from a OE6 identity" with "main identity" in a box below it or "Import mail from a OE6 store directory ".

Selecting the first option brings up a browse indow with the file name of the current new machine profile, you know the one in the "application/identites" folder that has a mile long name made up of numbers and letters. If I select the second option, it asks me to browse to the location of the messages to be imported. If I select the folder where I copied the pst file, and click Next, I get an error message that says "No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open ". Nothing else is running, so I assume this is not the proper way to import messages in OE.

I searched the posts and tried to find the FASTWIZ.EXE program to use, but it is not on the new system. Can anyone help?

    Try this :

On the Win 98m/c search for *.dbx files - these should be inbox.dbx, etc and copy them to the default folder of OE 6 on the XP m/c. You will find this by:

Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store folder

    Hope this helps :)

I copied all the dbx files to the current folder, but I chose not to over-write those already in there by ones of the same name. However, none of the copied stuff shows up in the list of folders in OE, only the folders that were on the new machine showing. Any other suggestions?

Why? If you have stuff in them, create a new folder, call it inboxold. Move everything you want to keep into it. Then overwrite, after you open OE again, move the stuff back to where you want it.

Well, I found a way that seems to work. The inbox.dbx file seems to be the only one that can overwrite what is there already. New dbx files will copy, but don't show up in the list of folders in OE6. On the old machine, if I move all emails into the inbox folder, then they will get copied over when I copy the inbox.dbx file. I can then create new folders and move them from the inbox. A little cumbersome, but it works.

    Thanks for the help! :)

Glad to hear that you got it sorted :)

Strange that the new dbx files don't show up.

To get the new .dbx files to show in OE, open OE and create new folders with the same name as the new .dbx files. Then using windows explorer, delete the files that were created when you made the new folders and then copy the .dbx files you want into the OE folder. This will get them to show up.
