    Hello

I am not sure about a file which appears on the desktop ' out of the blue .... '

I realise it may not have anything to do with OE but this is the only application I can attribute to it.

The file is like a .dat but has just ~ underneath the file icon.
If I click to open it ( after scanning ! ) I get the Windows cannot open this look for program etc which makes me feel it was created in OE or the address book.

It has happened to me a few times and is very confusing. I have a firewall / AV / Spybot etc none of which suspect anything.

The only link I could find was if I had OE open online - or edit my address book - after this when I came offline the mystery file was there. I just delete it but it does appear again after the same scenario.

Hopefully someone here can help solve the mystery. I am using Windows XP (HE SP1 ) IE 6 & OE 6 but am

Thank you in advance for any help to solve my mystery file.

Ha! Look here. The fixed promised by MS has, as yet, not been forthcoming!

    Hi Brett

I had sussed it then as in it was when I changed something in my address book ??????

Another faulty patch from M$ It seems to be a long time for a revised one to arrive .........

I now have to work out what solution was arrived at - got a bit lost in all the posts ;)

Thanks for the directions :) Brett to the rescue once again. Very much appreciated :)

miniB--As brett said, there is no solution yet.
What is happening is that the .wa~ file (backup for the Address Book .wab file) is no longer getting updated when you make a change in Address Book. If you can live without the backup, just delete the ~ file. If you want the backup to be updated, you will have to do it manually. Change the name of the ~ file to yourname.wa~ and use that to replace the now outdated yourname.wa~ file in (for Win98, anyway)
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book
In any event, your Address Book itself is still being updated.
P.S. You can view the ~, .wa~ and .wab files using wab in your Open With window. (You can also use Notepad or Wordpad, but the formatting is messed up.)
