Connect 2 computers to 1 monitor

I have 2 computers which I would like to connect to one monitor so I can shut down one then switch to the other computer. Would this be a major undertaking?

 

This would be very simple with a KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switch.

Pretty much this lets you attach one mouse, one keyboard and one monitor to multiple pcs.

One computer is USB the other Serial . My monitor is NEC LCD 2010x.

Would this do what I want to do? One of my computers OS is XP PRO USB & the other OS is 98 Serial. Will I need aditonal cables etc? My monitor is NEC LCD 2010x

WOULD YOU WANT TO SHUT THE OTHER ONE DOWN JUST TO
SEE THE ONE STILL ON ? WIN XP HAS MULTIPLE DESKTOP CAPABILITY..JUST CREATE A DESKTOP THRU THE NETWORK FOR YOUR OTHER PC.. THEN USE WHAT YOU NEED..

 

Nickhm - the nice thing about those switches is that you don't have to shut down either PC unless you want to. You can have both running and just toggle from one to the other. 1 mouse, kbd, monitor.

Thor - you said WIN XP HAS MULTIPLE DESKTOP CAPABILITY..JUST CREATE A DESKTOP THRU THE NETWORK FOR YOUR OTHER PC. That sounds interesting but I'm not really sure what you mean as it applies to Nickhm's situation. Could you explain a little more? And as a favor to my eyes, the ALL CAPS stuff is really hard to read so upper/lower case would be appreciated.

 

So you are saying that one of your computers has a serial mouse and the other has usb. I think there are some kvm's with usb, don't know if there are any with serial support. Unless I misunderstood what you said. I'm not really an expert in these things, I just know they exist.
