Windows update alerted me this morning (5/29) of two updates 811493 and Q815021. I had downloaded the 811493 when it was first released, but when I heard about the performance problems it created, I uninstalled it even though I wasn't having any noticeable problems. I decided to wait until the new release came out. I suppose the 811493 available now is the new release.

I did not download the 811493 or the Q815021 today. A friend called me today and said that she had heard on CNN that Microsoft had pulled a recent update. I found this article on CNN:

    Microsoft pulls update for Windows
Wednesday, May 28, 2003 Posted: 9:34 AM EDT (1334 GMT)

SEATTLE, Washington (Reuters) -- Microsoft Corp. said on Tuesday it has withdrawn a security update for its Windows XP software after discovering that it switched off Internet connections for some of the 600,000 users who downloaded and installed it.

The update, a small software addition that is used to fix and add features to existing software programs, was originally aimed at improving the security of Internet connections.

But after releasing the update on May 21, Microsoft discovered it was incompatible with other security firewall software used to protect home computers from attacks over the Internet.

    Removing the software
That shut down Internet connections for some of the users who had other security software already installed on their computers. Microsoft said those users were not at risk of a security breach and did not experience widespread system crashes.

Removing the software update would restore the Internet connection, Microsoft said. A new update was being prepared, it said.
    ____

It doesn't give the update number.

I read about the Q815021 update. It has three revision dates of May 28. I didn't see the date of May 21 - the release date in the article. I didn't get any alerts about an update dated May 21. I checked add/remove programs and I do not have a 815021 hotfix.

Does anyone know if it was the Q815021 update that was recalled or another update?

    Diddo that

Same thing here Zanetti...I uninstalled 811493 after reading in this and other fourms about what was causing a big slowdown on my box....I'm running great now...now I'm not too sure about putting anymore Windows updates on my computer until I hear from others about their experience with new updates. Read the same article in my local newspaper also....I wonder which update they are refering to also...could be Q815021....does anyone know??

Thanks for that info Charles. Thank goodness I didn't update and install 818043. I certainly wish M$ would check these things out before release. I'm getting really tired of having to search to see if there are problems before installing "critical updates" when the only thing "critical" about them is they cause problems for the end user. Wish Micro$oft would get their act together. Well now that I have vented my anger i'll stop. Thanks again for the info:)

So, the two updates that are pending on my windows update page: 811493 and Q815021 should be o.k. I'm still assuming that 811493 is the revised version of the one that caused all the problems. I'm still debating as to whether to download those two patches.
