    Have just upgraded a friend's machine by changing the M/B and processor, but now Win2K stops during boot-up (on a blue screen) and says that there is an inaccessible boot device. I have used all the existing components and re-checked the BIOS settings, but with no success. I've even tried the advanced start up options, but none seem to work, all ending up with this same message. If it helps, the program loads past the black and white 'Loading Windows 2000, press F8 for advanced options' screen, but stops once the colour Windows 2000 Splash Screen is displayed and the progress bar is about halfway along. As this machine is used by my friend for their business, I really don't want to lose anything on the disk if possible. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Try booting to the recovery console and running fixboot.

    Thanks for the reply, Newt, but how do I get there? There's no option for this in the advanced start-up menu. Sorry if I'm being dim.

    from -->

    http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/other/motherboard/win2k.htm

    "Windows 2000 is not plug and play when it comes to motherboards. When swapping motherboards with different HALs or chipsets in a W2K system you must reinstall W2K to force windows to redetect the chipset. The reinstall is done as an upgrade. The advantage of this procedure is that you get the setup engine doing a close inspection of the new setup, and loading drivers as needed. No Emergency Repair Disk is required. "

    follow instructions from Solution 3; In-place Upgrade to force fresh hardware redetection:
    This should not change any previous "visible" setups, only drivers, etc.

    Good Luck

    Thanks very much, TopDog for that info - all's now up and running as it should. Much appreciated.
