I am presently running Win98SE and will soon be installing Win XP Home. I am presently running a neat little freeware utility called End It All but the support information does not indicate it will run with XP.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Is there another freeware (yes I'm cheap) (also retired) that will work with XP?

In the event there is anyone not familiar with this program, it takes the place of ctrl+alt+del to close all running programs except explorer and systray.

In XP you can right click on the taskbar and bring up the Task Manager which lets you end applications or processes immediately.

Just put a shortcut on your desktop that shuts down the computer.
    Here's mine:
    %windir%\System32\SHUTDOWN.exe -s -t 00 -f
This shuts down windows immediately, stopping all processes and applications with NO delay.
If you want an instant restart, use this:
    %windir%\System32\SHUTDOWN.exe -r -t 00 -f

    Hi Ricky,

As you see, there is more than one way to accomplish the goal of shutting down APPs. One other way is bringing up XP in Safe Mode - F8 - where only the basic XP Services run. Combined with reboot's "fast shutdown ", the process is fairly fast.

    End It All

Great information guys. I really appreciate it. I basically use End It All to close running programs when installing new software, as well as preparatory to shutdown.

A couple of other relevant questions, tho: 1. When I install XP on top of 98SE what programs, if any will come over from 98 to XP, and, 2. if ans to #1 is none, how can I move v 1.0.0.33 from 98 to XP?

    Hope this makes sense!

fastest way would be to download it from the net. there are a number of sites where you can still grab version1. here is one of them

Any program that you have that runs in XP will carry over. Anything that won't, will be reported in the application compatibility report (if you choose to view it when given that option during upgrade).
99% of stuff will. Known issues arise mostly with Adaptec (Roxio) EZCD4, which will NOT work, and is recommended that you uninstall it completely before doing the upgrade.
Other programs of note, are Partition Magic (some older versions) Norton's Suite (inc NAV, NIS, and most others), that will not work during/after upgrade, and must either be upgraded, and/or reinstalled afterwards.

    reboot

I have Partition Magic 6 which works fine in fat32. I don't use NTFS and that may be the reason.

    hey jim

i thought that was precisely what he was looking for, v1.

v2 is available all over the place, but v1, now that's a bit of a tougher find. <g>

some of us are quite contented with v1 and don't like the added complexity of v2.

    :)

PM has nothing to do with FAT32 vs NTFS if it will run or not. It's older versions that simply don't work in XP. I don't think that PM6 will, at least not without a reinstall. I know that PM7 and PM8 both work with XP.

    End It All

You guys are G R E A T. Got everything I wanted plus more, and yes, End It All V-1 is what I run now and have heard too many deragatory comments on V-2. Many who have tried it have gone back to the simpler life of V-1.

Thanks again and I'll sure spread the word about the quality of this site.

I have XP Pro SP1 and am running PM 6. When I had NTFS, PM6 did not want to play nice. When I switched to Fat 32, It works just fine.
