what is the recommend value for an effiecient power supply?

    350W? 450W?

the specs on my computer are at the bottom. what do you guys think?

what does a lower supply do? will it short circuit the mobo and all of it's components?

The size of your power supply is dependant on how much load you are putting on it.

I have a 420W and am running two HDD, 2 CD Rom drives, Floppy. I could have put a 350W in it and not noticed any difference. Where you would notice the difference is if you were running a server with many HDD's.

If your PS is underrated, you would notice random resets and freezes. Similar to a failing PS.

Bmoore, thank you for your reply. perhaps you can suggest a proper power supply for me.

I am planning to use 2 HDD, 1CDR, 1CD-RW, 1 FLOPPY, 512MB of 333mhZ RAM, xp2500 and a ge4 ti4600 128MB. Other peripherals will include a PCI sound card and a PCI slot fan, that is all.

does brand name of PS matter?

I built this system from scratch and bought a server case with the power supply in it. It is a googlegear brand with a UNEEC PS in it. You can get a new tower and PS for around $100 and forget about cutting your hands up trying to install components.

Anyhow, to answer your question, Antec is a good brand. The main thing is to get not less that 350W with internal fans and make sure that it is AMD certified and that it will physically fit in your box.

I run Cheiftec towers. Antec are good ones and they are both made by Chenming who is now selling under their own name brand. I get mine from Newegg.
    A 420 pulls 5 hdds, cdrom, cdrw GF4Ti4200 4 case fans , ASUS A7V266-E mobo with a XP2000 .

Thanks for the link, Train. I have been using googlegear but at first blush newegg looks cheaper. At least for towers.

I find them very good folks to do business with.
I have yet to see a BAD post about them. I hit 4 or 5 different forums.
