Use Win 98 and OE 7, 128 MB RAM
Computer hung on me. When I shut down the computer manually i.e. press button on CPU and then rebooted I got the Microsoft scandisk screen which is normal. However, today I received a new box opening over scandisk saying Scandisk detected an invalid long filename entry on this drive (C) but was unable to fix it. To fix this problem, run scandisk for windows.
Went to programs/accessories/system tools/scandisk and tried to do scandisk for the C drive requesting a thorough scan. Clicked start and it started to go thru checking folders etc. Checking stopped and another dialog box opened headed up Scandisk is out of memory. Computer does not have enough available memory to complete the task. Retry. Did that nothing happened.
Went to programs/accessories/system tools/system information. It indicated that 71% of system resources free.
Also tried to do a disc defragmentation and it would not allow me to do it.
I am not sure what other information I need to provide so we can solve the problem. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thats probably because you have a bunch of other stuff running in the background. Boot into safe mode and then run scandisk or defrag.

    ;)

While your computer is booting, keep tapping the F8 key until you come to a menu where you can choose safe mode. Boot into safe mode and run scan disk and defrag and then reboot normally.
You might also want to run an updated virus scan and a scan for spyware.

Thanks for the info on how to boot in safe mode. Will try this.
I do have both Spybot and Adware on my system. I update them regularly. Is this enough or is there something else I should consider.

Your welcome. If you already have Spybot and Adaware then you should be fine as far as spyware goes :)

I should have mentioned in my previous message that I also have McAfee VirusScan Professional edition version 7.02. The only problem is I had to uninstall the firewalls portion of the program as I could not get it to work properly and it was hanging the computer all the time.

Were you able to run scan disk and defrag in safe mode?
