I have a Dell Optiplex GXi 5233M 233MHZ computer running Pheonix ROM BIOS 1.10 A06. I am getting Hard disk controller 1 failure. When i turn the machine on the hard drive will not spin, I put a diiferent hard in and the same result. Ihave p[lugged both into a different power supply, one fron cdrom, and still the same. I suspest Bios is bad.

Try plugging your HDD into the secondary IDE receptacle on the MOBO.

If secondary works, try removing the primary controller in device manager and reboot. It will be rebuilt auto.

If no joy, try clearing your CMOS and try boot.

Some MOBO's have a jumper that will clear CMOS. Otherwise remove the battery for 10 seconds. Power off of course!

A cleared CMOS will revert to defaults but you might check to see if boot devices are set to the right sequence. ie. Floppy, CD Rom, HDD.

Did you try the secondary IDE channel?
