Word 2000 - low in resources?

When I try to pull up a word document, it doesn't come up, and when I cntrl-alt-del, it tells me the system is dangerously low in resources. I've tried closing things, clearing temporary internet files, etc., to no avail. I did a scan disk, and it fixed some errors, but I'm still having the problem. When I tried to do a defrag, it only goes to 1% "checking for errors" and keeps going back and forth from 0% to 1%.
I haven't tried other applications, but my internet applications seem fine.
