Does anyone know if the little mobile flash memory storage drives can pass through the airport security equipment without harm?

I recently purchased a 128 mb flash memory stick for my friend who travels a lot but has no laptop. It’s no bigger than a folded up pocket knife, and just plugs into a usb port on any laptop or desktop, where it becomes a new drive onto which you can drag & drop data/program files both ways, etc.

She takes her database with her and when she stays as a guest at someone’s house. Using their computer (and with their permission), she installs the small program she uses, does her thing, then copies off the data and uninstalls her little program. The memory stick seemed to be much more convenient than constantly burning and shuffling CDs, or emailing a few 3-5 mb files to the next destination. I’ve shown her how to use it, put her little program’s .exe with its data files on it, and she is thrilled.

However, I have no idea whether these little devices will pass through the carry-on security scanner without harm, in a purse or bag. Also, don’t know if it will pass through the metal detector without harm. I called the airport, they're clueless and suggested I call Wahington DC for the answer. I emailed the mfr of the device, no answer yet.

I have no idea how stable that memory is and what kind of energy fields it might be susceptible to. I will suggest that she put it in the little tray with her keys, change, etc, but I’d just like to know if it’s safe if it inadvertently goes into that environment.

Does anyone know about this issue with flash? Is it the same with digital cameras? Waiting for enlightenment from my BBS gurus!! TIA-

    Look Here

Since all flash memory works on the same principle, this should help.

Note of caution: Some so-called flash memory actually isn't flash memory at all; it is actually a tiny hard disk packaged in a flash memory package. These are magnetic media the same as hard disks, floppies, zip disks, etc. So, different standards apply to these when seeking the kind of information you are looking for.

Thanks Alex, kind of a mixed bag, huh? You found more than I did, looking online. Seems though, that the general consensus is that the flash devices can go through the scanner for carry-on bags, possibly not the metal detector. I’ll keep holding on for something more definitive to pass along to her, hopefully from the mfr. She leaves on Tues. If I hear back from the manufacturer, I’ll post back with their reply.

best holiday rembrances to our USA folks!
