sysreg illegal operation

I tried a search, but couldn't find this fault. At startup, the system boots, although a bit slowly, then the above message pops up. The symptoms are very slow operation, if a program works at all. Also, I had NIS for a firewall, but it no longer starts at bootup, and nothing happens when I try to start it later. I did do a boot from my 6 month old NIS recovery floppy, but no virus was found. Suggestions?
