    Hi gang.
THIS IS A GOOD 1. I was surfing the web, and my comp started getting a little sluggish as it sometimes does. So I restarted. When it does its start up test it says it can't detect the HD. I have tried a couple of boot disks, win98,ultimate BD,and ones I made for use with partition magic and boot magic. They either wont work or say no disk installed or somthing like that. It's a Maxter 40g and only a few months old.

    Any ideas?

If you have the Maxter Floppy, it has a diagnostic program on it, so run it and see what it has to say about your hdd.

I have the maxblast setup disk.It does have a diagnostic test, it says call customer service. It also gives an error code, "t4jvl1.

I have read that HD's have fuses that may blow. Is this true and where is it located?

I think that is what you need to do. You may have a bad drive.

Never have hear that about fuses before.

But I would call the customer service and have that error code handy. They will probably RMA the broken thing.

Thanx for the help guys. Yup it's dead. They are sending me another one,so I guess I'll have to use my wife's machine for awhile.

Is there an inexpensive way to get back some of my lost data,or do I need a pro to do it?

Thanx again for all your help.

Believe me, you would send on Big $$$. as they take the platters out and basically make a new hdd using them , then copy the stuff.
Hate to hear the bad news. but do suggest looking into something like PowerQuest Disk Image 2002 and a cdrw. Maybe a second hdd also.
i have 2 hdd that I have the primary partitions that are bootable.
C:\ and D:\ I clone c: to D: with Ghost except for xp for which I use DI only.
But with DI I can Image straight to cds and I can image those cds back to the hdd using the rescue floppies that it can make.
    Backing up is very important.

Yea I thought it would be big bucks to have somebody work on the old drive. I have to send it back, when the new one gets here anyhow. But lucky 4 me my comp pretty much a toy,a learning toy. I have gotten to try many things I would not dream of on my wife's. Most of the stuff I had, I can get from her or on the web.

I did go buy an external 40g HD, to use 4 backing up both computers. Now just decide what software to use. I have been reading about Ghost, and it sounds like it do just about anything.

Question, If I make an image of my wife's HD and restore it to the external drive. Could that drive be connected to another comp and still be bootable?

    Thanx again

I may be guessing or thinking in writing but. Just the image STORED on the external might be OK but I do not think a RESTORE would work on another machine.

It may be bootable but more than likely would not work properly ( if at all ) on another machine due to the difference in hardware.

And if it did boot and made and saved changes to the files on the External, then it might not work properly on your Wife's machine again.

You are out of luck basically. Although, ghost 2003 is suppost to support some external devices, as no one has released DOS drivers for usb or firewire.

Question, If I make an image of my wife's HD and restore it to the external drive. Could that drive be connected to another comp and still be bootable?

Externals can not be made bootable. Again no DOS drivers have been released.

So it appears that I'm S.O.L so to speak. Ghost will no let me save an image to, the external HD, or to a partition on the main drive. That leaves the cd burner, which is on the wrong computer.
It looks like ghost is making false claims or I just don't know what the heck I'm doing, which is more likely the case.

Anyhow, looks like I'll have to wait for the new drive to come in.

Again, thanx for all your imput you guyz rock!

Radified Guide to Norton Ghost The best reference.

    Symantec Ghost pages

A good product and worth the money. I have restored C:\ in 7 minutes using ghost verses 7 hours minimum using format and reinstalling everything.

    UPDATE!

The new hard drive came in today. Guess what, the comp can't see it either.

I have several utillities to partition and format the drive, none of them can find the drive. EXCEPT the maxblast thats made for maxtor drives. maxblast will partition and format(fat32) the drive. But that is it. When I try to install the OS it cant find the drive.

I'm at a loss, don't know whats going on here. Any ideas?

    thanks

Did you check the jumpers on the new HDD to be sure it's set for Master?

Ok, here is how it went.

I did check the jumpers(ok). also ran maxblast diagnostic and got the same error message as on the old drive. . So not knowing what else to do I started poking around(again)cmos. I reset the bios to failsafe defaults and rebooted. It instantly found the new drive. So I thought for a moment and decided to try the old drive. Would'nt ya know it, works fine:mad: . Almost 2 weeks down for somthing that simple. Have used it for a day now and all is good. Had to reconfig my network connection, but I guess the problem is solved.

    Thanks to all.
