This only happens at shutdown, not restart. I always get a blue screen that reads:

    "Windows
An error has occured. To continue press enter to return to windows, or
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart your computer. If you do this, you will lose any information in all open applications.

    File Name: VMM(01) + 00009A71 Error: Od : 0028 : C000AA71

Press any key to continue. "

When I press a key, the computer either shuts down or more often I get the following blue screen:

    "Windows
An error has occured. To continue....(same as above)

    Error : 0D : 0167 : 00006114

Press any key to continue. "

When I press a key, the computer shuts down.

A google search with the first error code yields one other occurance with the same problem
    http://www.the-it-mercenary.com/forums/Windows98/posts/1774.html
but there was no reply to this person's post.

I suspect my problem may have something to do with installing Easy CD creator (basic version 5.xxx, which came with my samsung cdrw) and then upgrading using their online update install, as this is about the time I got this problem. I have also been trimming down some of the startup services via msconfig, but have only stopped non-essential services.

Do these error codes point to anything specific? Would reinstalling winme over existing winme help? I don't really want to do a clean install and reinstall all programs again, as I just did that with a new hard drive last week, and it took a long time to get to this point.

    My hardware is
    pcchips m810lr board
    athlon 900mz
    512mb ram
    wd 60mb
samsung CDRW and also samsung DVD
    creative audigy (1)
aiw ati rage pro 128 pci card

Many thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.

    HI gergev welcome

You could get more of the error details in the faultlog.txt
Please though only copy paste here the last couple (by date)and only the top portion of each, no need for all of it .

start search for files and folders type in faultlog.txt
If you have ued diskcleanup since the fault it wont be there..

Would you list for us exactly what you have disabled ?
and what you let run ?

    Thanks for your interest.
The faultlog.txt last record was from 5/16/2003, well before I started getting my blue screen problems.
(they pertained to windows 3D TEXT screen saver, HBFTOX0.EXE, and WINWORD and SAVE (spyware)).
Here is what is currently running at startup (via msconfig)
AIM, ScanRegistry, TaskMonitor, PCHealth, SystemTray, LoadPowerProfile, CountrySelection, TweakUI, Jet Detection (SB audigy), Quick Time Task, aiepk (popup stopper), LoadPowerProfile, *StateMgr, SSDPSRV, PersFw (tiny pers firewall), ImageFox add-on (ACDSee), run= .

I have disabled ATILaunchpad, these 3 PC-cillin startup svcs - PCCIOMON.EXE, pop3trap.exe, WebTrap.exe, PCTVOICE, AtiPTA, SIS Tray (I have disabled onboard sound in bios, due to my using SB Audigy), Dcfssvc (kodak camera dock software to use the dock - sees dock as a 'drive'), ATIPOLAB, SchedulingAgent.

I had previously disabled all the ATI svcs and PC-cillin svcs and SIS Tray, prior to my problem.

Recently I disabled the Dcfssvc, but the dock is not connected to the usb port and I disabled SchedulingAgent.

As I mentioned in my first post, I'm inclined to think it has something to do with my cdrw (dma enabled, is that ok?) and my easy cd creator software, which I updated via the web download updater. I had to set cdrw jumper to mstr and dvd to slave, both on secondary ide cable to get the cdrw to be recognized. I arbitrarily set them both to dma. They both work and do their job. It's the only major thing I can think of that I have done before getting this problem within the last day.

This is my son's computer and I want to get everything working right, then back it up using acronis true image software I just purchased (not installed yet). He has installed aim and kazaa on there (which comes with the cydoor spyware stuff), but I have run adaware, checked for viruses, scandisk - thorough, defraged, and I don't think those programs are the problem with the blue screen. Other than using msconfig to disable the services listed above, I have disabled all other programs that want to run in the system tray via their preferences, so the only programs that show up in sys tray are tiny pers firewall, aipex popup killer and aim.

I tend to think it is a hardware and probably a driver problem that is causing the bluescreen. I have the same problem with the adaptec (easy cd creator) services - CreateCD50 and AdaptecDirectCD and also the kodak Dcfssvc enabled and disabled. Either way I get the bluescreen. Sys properties device mgr show all drivers are 'working properly' except under System board extension for Pnp BIOS - This device is causing a resource conflict (Code 15), but this has always been like this, even with the old harddrive. I've had this motherboard for a few years and have plug and play enabled in the bios. I moved this mb into a new case and a new beefed up power supply a few days ago, and at startup BIOS alerted CMOS battery weak, and I replaced the motherboard battery yesterday. I don't think this shutdown problem occured until I configured the optical drives and installed the easy cd creator update.

Gee well so only you can tell what need to run at startup
I would leave all windows services on and vid card
    Startups - Full list: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

so if I understand you youve disable the anti virus program and are keeping Kazaa with only a firewall to protect you ?
    at least get Kazza lite..

Thats one of the bigest problems trying to diagnose, we always
feel its becouce of our lates changes when in fact sometimes they
develop over time or just dont show up sometimes for mounths.

I suggest atleast two anti virus online scans ..
even if current one was up to date w/Kaxxa installed.
Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan - Scan Now:
    heres One
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Adaware is good most people also use SpyBot
Search & Destroy by PepiMK Software: install, update it restart PC before scaning
    http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
also I very much recomend a trojan scan , download the trial
    update it before useing.
    http://www.anti-trojan.net/en/download.aspx

Sorry cant help there --someone else with attempt after
doing the above, I think :)

I see you also posted atthe win me newsgroup's.
let us know what they recomend ?

    Thanks Mart,
That is a great site. The first thing I tried (since it
seemed to be the easiest) did the trick. I had disabled
all sounds in the control panel sounds and multimedia. I
added back a sound for "Exit Windows ". Upon shutdown I
got an error "MSGSRV32 has caused an error in USER.EXE.
MSGSRV32 will now close ", but no blue screen. I shutdown,
rebooted and the next time I shut down, no blue screen or
error msg. According to aumha.org winme sometimes needs
some more time to properly shutdown and adding a sound can
    give it that time.
It's wierd though, I had all the sounds configured
to 'none' well before I started having the blue screen
    problems.
Well if the problem reoccurs, at least you have given me a
good site as a reference to try other fixes.
    thanks again!!
