I have a problem with device manager. CDROM branch is missing completely. I have two CDROMs which both work fine and are listed in windows explorer. I can not use the cdrw function as the cdrom is not listed in device manager. I use Win98SE OS. Any ideas?

Did you install or try a reinstall of the CDRW drivers for your OS that came with the drive ?

Boot into safe mode and head back to device manager - remove anything and everything listed under CDROM. Then reboot normally. What happens now?

You may also want to look around for duplicate entries in other hardware categories. Just be cautious in System Devices - there will be and should be several duplicates found there.

Thank you fro replying - drivers for cdrw will not load as they have nothing to refer to and dont think cdrw is there. It works fine as a cdrom!

Thank you Rockster2U - I have already tried that and nothing happens - have even tried unplugging cdroms and booting then plugging them back in to force detection -nothing!
Device manager list shows nothing unsual - just CDROM missing. List reads: Diisk drives, Diaplay adapters, Floppy disk controllers, Hard disk controllers, Keyboard etc.. No mention of CDROM!

A suggestion that may work is to go into Control Panel\Add New Hardware, just let it run and see what it finds.

Sounds like your secondary IDE controller decided to take a vacation (assuming your CD drives are running off the secondary controller). What do you see in Device Manager under Hard Disk Controllers? Also, you may want to check your BIOS settings and make sure both the primary and secondary IDE controllers are enabled. Lastly, although you have checked and re-checked your cabling, you may want to try a new 40 pin cable in there.
