    Tinker,

    Welcome to the BBS

Try checking your system files -

Start > Run type in : 'sfc /scannow' without the quotes.

You will probably need your XP CD.

    Thanks Pete,

Tried this did not seem to work. Do I need to stop the service / re-boot or should the sfc /scannow provide in instant fix ?

    Yours hoping Tinker

    Hi -

I had the same problem, in fact I got a similar error message when bringing up system properties by My Computer|Properties.

If this sounds familiar, then this fix may work for you as well:

After running the XP Repair from the Win XP CD, I installed all the available updates (the repair seems to have wriiten over the majority of them), and the problem went away.

My eddy-kated guess :)D) would be that a corrupted file was repaured in one of the updates, if you do them one at a time you may found out which update does the repair and save someone the time later.

Let me know if this works, as it'll be handy info for me.

    Good Luck,

Baza, Arie - Thanks for the suggestions. Per your note the system Resore Tab does not even appear when you right click my computer properties & yes there goes the same error message.

I've tried looking in the services & applications & System restore appear to be on. Equaly no problem turning off. But the probem still exists.

    Machine updated to no avail.

    Arghh!!!

Some additional info. I've revently resolved a virus issue on the machine - I'm beginning to wonder if the _Restore folder has the virus as I'm led to believe that this has some form of protection, which will not allow it to be cleaned ?????

I never looked into that possibility.

If I would ever get a machine infected, I know the only way that I can completely trust the machine to be free from viri or backdoor programs is to wipe the thing clean, and start from scratch!

I will offer another answer to that.

One great big hugh YES The virus can ( or might ) be in any and all forms of backups that were made after the infection.

I were using Windows ME or XP and I was to find a Virus had Wormed its way in the FIRST item of business would be to shutdown the system restore and let it clean out the restore points.

In fact I would delete the RB00X.CAB files that 98SE makes also. And shut Scanregistry off until I got things cleaned up.

The restore points ( folders or whatever the thing is called ) WILL contain waht ever was in the system at the time of creation. Be it good, bad or indifferent.

Also from some discussion about this a LONG time ago it was pointed out that even if a Virus cleaner was to clean up the backups it just might remove some files rendering the restore point USELESS anyway.

This not only comes from my thinking but from an actuall situation of a Friend ( former ) that cleaned up a Virus and then against my better judgement use a three day old restore point.

Then he came to and B****ed at me. I ain't seen he in months.

Backups are nice and handy to restore things if needed. But they also require some thought as to when they were made.

    Thanks to all !

I bit the bullet, re-formatted & reinstalled XP on my operating system drive. All now well - machine running better than it's done in years !

I will certainly recommend the site.

    Regards,

    :D
