    Lonny,
Here is a post from the Tech Support Guy forum which claims that AVG will remain free.

Who knows? I am presently using AntVir which is a German av program, and I like it very much. The only drawback I have found is that there are no incremental updates. When an update is available (fairly frequently) you must download and install the whole program -about 3.6 Mb.

I tried Avast but I really don't like the GUI and I'm not sure about certain other features of it.

    Lonny,

My OS is Win98 (original edition). Here is the link for Antivir. It works on all OS's.

All: below is an interesting update to the AVG / Avast analysis (from Langa List newsletter (cleaned up a little)...). FWIW, I had Avast installed for a while and had mixed impressions of it (mostly favorable), but overall I almost stuck with it over AVG, but was convinced otherwise within the confines of this forum... I included an ending blurb about NOD32, which I know nothing about, but it seemed to be an informative blurb...

"...just finished reading today's Plus Letter and Alan Reeves' heads-up re Avast. Recently, I was having some concerns with my Norton Antivirus. I had a good run with it and it did what was required of it, but I had problems with the auto-updating feature to the point that I turned it off and pulled down the updates manually, Then I discovered AVG. I pulled Norton and replaced it with AVG. The auto-updates worked great. I just had one not so small reservation. AVG does not support my Netscape POP e-mail
    client. From their FAQ page:

"The E-mail scanner button is inactive.
The AVG E-mail scanner does not support every E-mail
client. Supported clients are MS Exchange, MS
Outlook and Qualcomm Eudora which use the MAPI
protocol. If you are using a different client be
assured that you are fully protected by the AVG
    resident shield.
The number of supported E-mail clients is growing,
so make sure that you get the latest update. "

Naturally, I clicked on the Avast link and hooked their freeware avast! 4 Home Edition page where I found this

"E-mail protection consists of two independent
modules; first, there is a generic scanner working
on the SMTP/POP3/IMAP4 protocol level. It is capable
of protecting any existing e-mail client that uses
    these protocol "...

Another favorite AV tool--- Nod32--- has just released a
new version that vastly simplifies its integration with email systems. Nod32 is a truly excellent antivirus tool. "

    Hi Lonny,

I use NOD on my 9X OS. Use NAV2002 on XP.

Uninstalled an earlier version of NAV from 9X because of the resource usage.

The amazing thing about NOD is it uses RAM, hardly any systems resources. The scanning is incredibly fast, 70K+ files in something like 6 minutes on a 1.1 gig system. Does eat up the RAM, down to ZERO, bounce back up, down to zero, etc. System resources stays at around 60%.

Here is the Forum site http://www.wilderssecurity.com/index.php

    Regards - Charles
