I have just wiped off my Windows 2000 Pro which was working fine. I formatted the drive and installed Windows XP Pro. Now, the whole system has seemed to slow down.
It seems to move in jerky motions when scrolling down on the net.
When I start the computer, it runs down various shades of blue before it arrives at the right one. This seems like a poor frequency type of problem.

Is it because I have an Athlon 700 with 256 Mb Ram or do i need to change something in the BIOS to speed it up like the way it use to be with Win 2k?

    I'd appreciate any help.
    Thanks

For starters do you have the proper video drivers installed ? and installed properly ? Reads like they possibley are not.

I do not know for sure about XP. But with 98SE that did not always mean the latest and greatest. My ATI card would take the newser MY FeForce4 take drivers two generations old in order to be compatable with all.

Also did you install any Motherbaord ( chipset ) drivers that may be required ?

    Jetheat,

Did you run Windows Update after the installation ? If so you will have installed Q811493 - this can slow the computer to a crawl - see other posts on this subject. Search for Q811493.

    Remove it - Add/Remove Programs

I dont have a graphics card but that didn't matter with win 2k. It worked fine. I use a flat panel monitor which uses a PCI card.

I haven't even begun to install any software and still it's slow. Could it really have anything to do with the speed of my computer clock or do I need to get another monitor with a graphics card? But somehow I dont think its got anything to do with Graphics Card. It just started being slow as soon as I installed Win XP.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks

I think I would start again. Xp likes to have a squeeky clean formatted hd. Make sure you get the installation right. If not right the second time, do it again. Take your time and read the instructions carefully. Don't be too anxious to hit the enter button: it's an easy trap to fall into.

    Cheers,

No software yet... ...somebody mentioned chipset drivers and video drivers. You didn't respond to those suggestions. Are they installed? If you did, did you install drivers that are compatible with XP?

You may not have a video card, but if not, then you have a video controller on the motherboard. It may also need drivers.

Look up driver availability at the mobo website and look for something that is XP compatible. The drivers that come with XP may be OK or not.

Did you check your hardware to see if it is on the compatibility list for XP?

After the install, did you look in the Event Viewer to see if there were any problems listed in the log?

    Thanks for your suggestions.
All I had to do was install an updated driver for Win Xp. Although the driver doesn't exist for my monitor, I installed something similar and thank god it's working better now.
    Thanks for all the info.
