I went to windowsupdate and downloaded the latest updates.

    They were:

813489 April 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
330994 April 2003, Security Update for Outlook Express 6 SP1
817787 April 2003, Security Update Windows Media Player for XP

I am not sure which installs completed, but at some point the machine needed
to be rebooted for the installation to complete. After it rebooted XP would
just goto a blank screen (after the Windows XP logo.)

    Safe mode will boot fine.

I tried restoring to a restore Windows Update restore point (presumably made
    by the installer) and nothing.

I tried restoring "system checkpoint" or whatever from earlier in the day.
    Nothing.

I ran XP setup and selected repair: Nothing.

I "clean booted" per Microsoft's Q article on clean booting and it worked
once. The next time I rebooted: Nothing.

    HELP!!

    So in safe mode.

Go to add/remove and uninstall all 3 updates!

Then reinstall IE by the following means:

    start
    run
    type

    rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf

I should have came here first.

Did i mention that I have already reinstalled?

Right before i came here to check again I booted from the floppies and told it to overwrite my existing windows partition with a new installation. (after accidentally installing a new installation on another partition) :(

I had already done a "repair" installation anyhow.

That seemed to remove all of the "fixes" from the installation folder anyhow.

Would what you have said to do have worked?

And if so what the heck went wrong?
