I want to share my DSL on my 2 computer network.

I am using a Efficient Networks Speedstream 4060 USB modem.

My question is: (Please forgive me if this question should be in the Hardware section), How would I configure internet connection sharing between my two computers? (Not the software portion).

Can I use a router? If so, how do I connect the modem to the router if my modem is USB.

I think I have no chance to set this up because of my USB modem.

If anybody has done this, please let me know how the physical connections were made.

    Thanks

Sorry, But I am almost positive that no one makes DSL Routers for USB...
What I have is a Netgear FV318 was a bit pricy but allows me to initiate VPN Connections.
But a good router with a 4 port switch, that has DCHP is $100-$175...
Would recommend avoiding Linksys... Personal Opinion...
Had problems with two different Linksys routers.
But no problems yet with Netgear routers.

But these do require having a DSL Modem with a RJ-45 Port (Network Cable).

Without it you can use MS ICS...
It works much better on a Win2K machine...
I have had problems in the past with Win98 being a DHCP Server.
But all you need to do is run a straight through network cable between the two computers... or Crossover cable if you are using a hub...
The better of the two computers should be the one connected to the modem...
The other should have its IP set automatically from a DHCP Server (or you primary computer, which will act as a DHCP provider once ICS is enabled)...
    good luck..

Vantica - interesting about your problems with the Linksys router/switches. I think that just about everybody in the IT shop here who have broadband at home are using them and I haven't heard any screams. I have had good luck with mine but 1 good of 1 tried isn't exactly a good universe for me to judge from.

ejh4` - make sure that whatever method you use, you have a good firewall in place. Dead easy and automatic with a router running NAT. I have no clue about ICS since I have never messed with it.

    I full agree with Newt...
Inexpensive $100 Router with basic NAT, DHCP, Firewall (At least for Denial of Service attacks)...
Is alot more simplistic than dealing with ICS...
If ICS stops working correctly you end up kill yourself trying figure out what the deal is...
But with a router, a simple restart works evertime...
Newt did have a good point... I have only delt with one Netgear router - no problems...
And I never had problems with my four port linksys... Until attempting to flash the bios...
But the single port linksys... I personally think is a waste...
Nothing against linksys... They make awesome products...

I have several in the field and they work great.
Not the fastest in the latency dept. for gaming but otherwise very easy to setup in a brouser based interface.
They do DHCP, IP filtering, port fowarding. You can open up a specific IP address to the DMZ plus log users internet habbits. Everytime a flash comes out they get better.

Sounds like your ISP thinks they got one up on us. I would have raised hell and told them you didn't want a USB modem.

I have a three computer network ethernet hookup.
I have an alcatel speed touch USB modem (adsl)
I am sharing the internet connection in win98se
with internet connection sharing, it works great.
the only setting i had to change manually was,
In control panel with ICS installed the internet options
control panel has under the connections tab,
a sharing setting, in the dropdown list you have to choose
which network adaptor you want to use to connect to the internet,
and which network adaptor you want to use for your lan,
    (or home network)
The modem is connected to my USB connector on the back of my computer.
I installed enternet 300 software, then installed internet connection sharing, then went to the internet options and fixed the sharing settings under connections\sharing
if you have more than one network adaptor you have to define
which one does what in the settings, ICS doesn't know.

I too have the Alcatel modem. Running a 850 mhz as a "server" running 98SE, the other two computers are connected through a std hub ( read not a router ), and both of the other two are running XP. I have no problems whatsoever getting connected with any of the machines.the 850 is the only one that ICS is set up on, the rest just go into internet properties/connection tab and have it connect via a LAN connection..... was that simple. I know alot of people have had trouble with diff protocols etc, but I haven't had problem one going this way. In fact, on one computer, I had to set it up as mentioned before, on my new machine, hooked it up, and when I hit the IE button to setup the connection, it just popped up, and ran fine without any input from me. :D
