I'm having a problem with the accessories in win.98 SE. they have left my computor. I have no calculator or any of the other tools. No scandisk, defragment or anything else. All is gone. Guess the kids wiped it out somehow. How can I get them back? Hope someone can help me! Thanks

First make sure they are trully gone and not just misplaced by an accidentital dragNdrop/move.

Do a find for folder called programs. Your looking for the special folder with the fancy multicolored icon not the plain vanilla folder with the same name, this one is normally found in c:\windows\startmenu.

Let me know if you find it.

    ====
Another way to check for a misplacement is do an [F3 keyboard key] file search for accessories or a general search for *.lnk and see where the familiar shortcuts for these tools are hiding.

By the way if you have calc.exe in c:\windows\folder you have the calculator, if you have SCANDSKW.EXE in c:\windows you have scandisk etc etc. I think/hope this is going to boil down to a moved folder/shortcut.

The EASY way to recover them all, is open Add/Remove programs in control panel, select the Window components screen, Accessories, and if things are not checked, put in the check marks, and click OK.
If things ARE checked, take the check marks OUT, hit APPLY, then put the check marks back in, click APPLY, OK, and restart if needed.

    Oh s..u..r..e reboot,

Rain on my parade. I was just curious where the thing was hiding. I was saving the add/remove step as my rabbit_out_the_hat trick.

I did say it was the easy way. :D
They're probably all still resident in the c:\windows folder, but your shortcuts have simply vanished into the ether.

    re- lost accessories

Have looked for the file called *.Ink and it isn't there. Have tried to re-install it from CD but says it can't find the file. I do have scandisk exe. and defrag exe. but no calculator or any thing else. When I insert the CD it says it doesn't find the file for accessories . What do I do now?

When I insert the CD it says it doesn't find the file for accessories .

If you are trying to ge tehm form the CD you need to point the search to the Win98 folder on the CD. Just pointing it to the CD will not find them.

    for example

    [CDROM Letter ]:\win98.

    such as D:\win98.

The search for files should be *.Lnk, the L may have looked like a capital I.
If you have a Emergency Recovery CD, not a M$ Windows CD, windows will not find it. If this is the case, look for a folder on your hard drive named C:\Windows\Options\Cabs, the setup files are sometimes copied there.

A question looking for info only.

If the EM recovery is what I think you are referring to why would the Windows .cab files not be on it ?

They may or may not be in the same Win98 folder but it would not surprise me if they were.

Isn't the EMR CD meant to do an OEM re-install of Windows if needed ?

It's just that I know of one case where the setup files were actually in a BIN file, buried under a few sub folders. A PowerSpec PC
