I have just switched from netscape email to outlook express. Netscape email would show by my clock automatically to alert me to new email. With Outlook,it seems I have to go into the program first and click on Send/Receive to see if I have new email. Is there a setting somewhere to do this. I have looked everywhere I think, but nothing pertains to it. TIA

    Hi Katy!

In Outlook Express, click tools / options and find the send/receive boxes which should be ticked and the timing set acccording to Your preferences.

An envelope appears next to the clock in OE too.

    Regards,
    Christer

Christer, the boxes were already checked and the time was set for 2 min. But I still can't get the alert by the clock, only if I have the program open. Does IE have to be my default browser for the Outlook to automatically alert? Or do I have do just open the program and leave it open all day? Thanks for your quick response.

You can download a free utility, HideOE which will minimize Outlook Express to the system tray while leaving its mail-checking feature running.

Just enable the email sound notification in Control Panel if you want that feature when new mail arrives.

Yes, to the best of my knowledge, You have to start OE and be connected to Your ISP.

I don´t know what You mean by "default browser ". I think that You can have IE as well as Netscape installed and start the one that You´d like to use.
You don´t have to start IE to use OE.

I´ve never used Netscape and don´t understand how it can detect incoming E-mail without beeing started or have I missed the obvious?

Christer,I guess it could be because when I log onto the internet with Netscape, that maybe the email program opens automatically, since it is part of Netscape. Is IE and Outlook two different programs installed separately? All I know is,on netscape just being on the internet alerts me with an envelope by the clock without ever going into the mail program at all. Like I said this Outlook thing is new to me,so I haven't a clue. :D

    Katy,
when Windows is installed, IE and OE are part of the package. IE and OE are fairly integrated, as I understand it they share quite a few components but they are still separate programs which are started separately.
After a bit of juggling, OE can be uninstalled if a different E-mail program is preferred.

In Your most recent post, You mention Outlook. That is a different program to Outlook Express. It comes bundled with the Office suites and has further functions, more business oriented.

The only way I've ever found to get Outlook or Outlook Express to reside in the system tray (like Netscape's email program) is by using third-party software like the one here and here, although the one I linked to in my first post is free, the others are not.

If you're running Outlook XP (not Outlook Express), there's a registry hack to minimize it to the tray on this page.
