    Hi tainted19

Welcome to the BBS - sorry to hear you've got problems :(

Do we assume that the PC is working OK apart from this problem with updates - or is it still running at snail's pace?

First question is - have you an XP installation CD or just a Dell recovery CD?

If, as I suspect you have only a recovery cd the re-installation of XP is relatively straightforward, BUT the hard drive will be formatted and the system restored to the state that it was when it left Dell. In other words any programs you have installed and all your data will be lost.

However I guess the Dell has a CD-RW drive so the first thing to do is to burn all your personal data files, etc to CD and when you are absolutely sure that all the data is backed up boot from the recovery cd and follow the on-screen instructions.

There are probably other ways out of this dilemma - so do nothing until this thread has run it's course and keep logging on for the latest comments.

:) thanks pete for answering,my system is slow all the time now, it seems to be getting worse ,also i can't get on line anymore,it takes three or more tries ,i know nothing about computers so i have been going around like a chicken with its head cut off!i don't know how to save my settings i don't know how to find them,i just had road runner installed on april 30.the tech could not find out why the system was so slow,on may 12 i switched to aol for broad band and now its worse than ever ,aol blames timerwarner cable and time warner blames aol then aol blames norton internet security, and they all blame dell.sorry i know i'm rambling.i emailed dell and they sent ten suggestions that don't come near answering the problem.the only other thing that i have installed since the computer came was a printer/scanner. and renewed and upgraded antivirus software & cable connection ,how do i find  the settings for the cable installation, and how do i copy my norton anti virus.i downloaded it from symantec and it took hours to do that.:( thanks for any and all help:D

Tainted, read thru this thread http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18097

Do you have a restore point for a day prior to the patch? If you you do and go back to that point, you will lose a lot of data since that point including any registry changes which means MS updates as well. This also includes programs that were installed in the meantime; have to re-install them.

Backup the data to keep to a CDROM or DVD if you have a burner.

For everyones info: I have a Dell. The CD that comes with the system is a full version of the OS.

    Tainted,

Think we are getting somewhere, now :)

Charles is right - the simplest (?) way is to use System Restore to return the PC to the state it was in prior to the Q811493 patch.

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > Restore my computer to an earlier time. Select a restore point prior to the installation of the Patch - if you are lucky this will be noted on the list next to the calendar.

You should not lose any of your recent data - but still wise to back it up. The changes System Restore makes are reversible, BUT before you run System Restore :

Make a note of the details for your Cable connection under IE - Tools > Internet Options > Connection > Settings and Properties - you may need to re-enter these once the problem is solved.

For your download of Norton the situation is not so simple - I guess it would have downloaded to a directory somewhere from which it was then installed. Where that may be I don't know, but the directory is likely to be called Symantec. It is not the directory called Symantec in Program Files - that is the instal directory. It may be in your Windows\Temp folder. Sorry I can't be more specific - I've always had the CD version. It may be possible to download again from Symantec at no extra cost - maybe they sent you an email at the time?

If one System Restore is unsuccessful try one dated earlier.

If this method does not work it would appear from Charles' post that you have a full version of the Installation CD - this is GOOD NEWS :) :) , but try System Restore first and then post back and we'll guide you through a repair of XP.

Thanks Pete for 'fleshing" out the System Restore instructions, I quess I've been using it for so long, I make unwarrented asumptions.

The following are quotes from: WindowsXP Inside/OUT by Ed Bott and Carl Siechert concerning XP's System Restore:

"By default, System Restore maintains a strict hands-off policy on all files stored in your My Documents folder and in the %SystemRoot%\Downloaded Program Files folder. Every other folder on your system is fair game, however, and the results can be disconcerting. After you use System Restore to roll back your system to a previous configuration, you may discover that the utility wiped out executable files, scripts, dynamic link libraries (DLLs), TrueType fonts, and Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF) files that were stored outside of your My Documents folder and that had been downloaded after the date of the restore point you selected.

System Restore does not monitor the following files and folders:

The page file (virtual memory) or hibernation file.

Any files of any type stored in the following personal data folders:

My Documents, Favorites, Cookies, Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files, History, and Temp.

Image and graphics files, including bitmap and JPEG files, and files that use extensions commonly associated with data files, such as .doc, .xls, .mdb, and .pdf.

E-mail files managed by Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. "

    End of quote.

Your mention of AV updates is on target: re-updating is necessary.

I use SR rather frequently in ways as outlined by Guivon in the referenced post. You can't wait too long to discover if an update of any kind is bad.

    Regards - Charles

Well - it should :) At least Dell have recognised a problem which could tie in with your slow internet connections.

Assuming Dell are going to install the m/b then they will hopefully return your PC tested and in proper working order.

I should back up your data if you can before letting Dell have the PC they may well reformat the drive and re-install XP, etc.

Let us know if this solves your problems.

:D update to my slow computer and not being able to log on thru broadband!on wednesday may 28 dell sent someone to install new motherboard, but they sent the wrong motherboard.on thursday they sent some else to install a motherboard ,it was the right one ,but the tech had some problems and after he finished it did not make any difference, talked to dell they said i had to do a fix reinstall, after i got home from work at 10pm called dell and finally got a tech to help me everything seemed ok he said it would take about 30 minutes to finish and he would call me back in 30 minutes ,he also said that as soon as the computer reboots to remove the cd, i removed the cd and a message came up to please insert the xp cd to finish installing windows, after waiting another 30 minutes i called dell again got another tech and they had me shut the computer off at the button and restart and put the cd back in,after another 30 minutes it finished .when trying to connect to internet it said the subsystem failed, the tech said that i will have to do a clean reinstall because something went wrong.well by this time it was 2am.the next day (friday) i went to by cable company and got a new modem, they kept telling me nothing was wrong with the one i had, but being an old lady they did not want to fight with me in public:D so i brought home the new modem and installed it and after some &*#@*@#%*+#*&**&^-^%$$ it worked!!!and i have not had a problem with getting on line but now i have error messages poping up and constant cannot display pages,so i am going to reinstall the os i think i will do it by the owners manual! this is quite a learning experince before i started all i could do was surf:rolleyes: i still not sure if i wanted to learn how to do this:D and if i don't laugh about it i will throw the puter out the window and drive over it!

Nothing like going in at the deep end ! Sorry to hear that you've had a such a rough time with Dell - not exactly good service - you would have expected better.

The problem with these techies is that they sometimes forget that they have a novice on the other end of the line and sometimes their instructions lack clarity. As you now know the PC reboots several times during the install and the CD must be left in until the bitter end.

Hope your re-install goes smoothly - read the manual carefully!

    Keep on smiling :) :)

Delighted to hear that - sems like Dell redememed themselves at the final whistle. :D

Incidentally that pesky 811493 patch has been re-released by M$ and seems fine - no reported problems to date.

Any more problems - you know where to come !!
