I can get on the internet fine with my password, however, when I open the email to send I get a box that comes up that says "Invalid password, enter new one." I can type in the password, but the computer freezes up when I try to click on the "OK ". I than have to C/A/D and it comes up in safemode than. I just leave it off for a while and it boots up normally. Why is this happening. My server is no help, they say it is netscape error. I have netscape 4.79 and 98SE version of windows. Grrr! this is so maddening.TIA

    Hi Katy,

It's your Mail Server that is requesting the password... Netscape is not the server.

Try removing your user name from the Outgoing mail server user name field, and see what happens.

Just to cover all the bases, have you enabled "Remember Password and Check For Mail Every 10 Minutes "? This setting is found in:
    Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups | Mail Servers | Edit

    Open Notepad
    Select File | Open
    Browse to:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername
    Open the prefs.js file
    Do you see this script:
    user_pref( "mail.remember_password ", true);

When you installed 4.79 a couple of weeks ago, you weren't having any problems then. What has changed, if anything, since then?

Hi Ramona, yes it is checked to remember password and it also has the pref.js line correct too. Before I upgraded I started getting the email password box thing pop up when I would send my 1st email every day. Now,I can't even begin to type an email, and the box asking for a correct password to be entered pops up. I than am completely froze up. I have no clue, and neither does my internet provider. I tried 5 of their techs and only one actually got it to work(it only worked that one time).:( So now the only way I can send or get email is to actually go to my providers site and login to their webmail. I tried reinstalling netscape last night in case that would work, but NOPE. :lol Any clue?

    Katy,

What happens when you delete the password in your Netscape Mail settings, as suggested earlier?

Also, you said that you could get on the Internet just fine without having to enter a password. O.K. fine, that is a Windows Dial Up Networking password.

Sorry,I forgot to mention that removing my user name from the Outgoing mail server, got me the same response. SAFEMODE LOL. The password that I have for my dialup is the same password that I have for my email. Sounds like the email part is lost for me.

    Katy,

I just can't figure out what is going wrong here, as your password shouldn't cause Netscape to crash! Neither should you have to use your ISP webmail to retrieve your POP3 Mail. That is totally unacceptable.

Just to check a few settings:

In your Mail & Newsgroups | Mail Server
    Use secure socket layer (SSL)....
    Select: Never

    Ensure:
Outgoing (SMPT) server setting information is correct
General and POP Settings are correct
    Double check for typo's
I would contact your ISP again to confirm that they are correct

    Under Advanced | Proxies:
Select: Direct connection to the Internet

    With Netscape closed:
    Back up your Users Folder

    Open the Mail Folder
Delete the Sent and Sent.msf files
(If you have Mail in the Sent Folder, it will be saved in the Users Folder backup)
These will be rebuilt when Netscape is restarted

If you have enabled "Spell Check Messages before sending "
    Disable the setting

    As a last resort:
    Close Netscape
    Do a "Find" for nsreg.dat
    Delete the file

    Start Netscape
Profile Manager will ask to create a new Profile
    Use the existing Profile name

If none of the above resolve the problem, then I believe you must look to your ISP for the solution. Ask them to give you a new password.

Ramona, all the things you asked me to check are ok.I got a new password and that is when my problems started. I will check tomorrow with my server to see if maybe they can come up with an answer. Thanks for trying anyway. :)
