Win98fe/OE6 : A friend sent me a batch of 5 emails this afternoon and this batch of 5 keeps downloading duplicates of these same 5 emails. Is happening only with this one sender as far as I know. Problem has deteriorated to where my mail server has 8 emails on it now but it chokes on #2 and can't get the rest of them. Help would be appreciated(I can see the emails via Mailwasher).

Update: I had the idea to check the problem emails on Mailwasher and delete them there and that fixed the duplication altho I don't know what the problem was, but was evidently one of those emails that was causing it. Not much help , but the problem is gone.

That's the first time for me but, yes, I have Norton and hadn't thought of that.

    Food for thought.

That can be a little dangerous. At the advice of a Friend ( and aginst mine ) my daughter did that and wound up with Virus infected machine.

I believe MailWasher is the better way to go. That takes them right off of the server.

This happen to a work computer of a guy who didnt check his mail in weeks. It kept choking on like #27. I tried everything, until I when to the ISP webmail and checked his account. Found one mail that had no subject, no sender, no text, etc. Somehow this one email got corrupted and was choking the system. Was able to deleted from there..

Billy Bob, straighten me out if I have a misconception about Auto Protect. Way I figger is that email protect catches 'em when being downloaded from mailserver. If email protect is disabled, inadvertantly or on purpose, won't Auto Protect catch the scoundrel if you try to open an offending app. if it gets on to your computer?
I fixed the problem by viewing in mailwasher and deleting the offending email.

It maybe should but will it.

It may well depend on how OE is set up. If the preview pane is open NAV * MAY NOT * catch it.

All that some Viruses need is to be in the Preview Pane and do not need to be actually opened. That is why I also have the preview pane shut down in Eudora. Even with NAV ( now AVG ) checking mail.

I myself do not even have OE installed on any machine. No Windows address book either.

In my Daughters' case NAV did not catch it.

Also there are Viruses that will disable an Anti-Virus program.

I myself think you did the better thing. But you are the one who has to do what you think is best.

I myself do not check e-mail with Eudora first. I use MailWasher and clear out the trash first.

I don't do preview pane and also usually check email with MW before email program. It has reduced spam by a great amount. I still get some but is a good program.

Norton Anti-virus scans the mail before delivery to the mail client.
