I have a setup a network at home, with 5 machines, 4 of them Windows XP Professional and 1 Windows 2000 Professional. I have DSL and from the DSL modem I am connected to the modem through a Linksys router I have internet and everything is working .I am able to see all the 5 machines in all the XP machines under "Entire Network/Microsoft Windows network/Mshome" but I can share file and print only between the 4 XP machines.( no access to the Windows2000) I am not able to see any of the XP machine from my 2000, also I am not able to ping any of the XP machine, but I can ping my router. and I am able to brows the inter net form the windows 2000 machine, and do all the inter net activities form this machine. Except no file sharing and printing. What is preventing the Windows2000 machine from seeing other XP machines? I have file and print sharing for Microsoft , NetBIOS under the network property, and I marked IP for DHCP. Could somebody help with this problem Please

I have virtually the same problem. I am running a home network with an XP computer, ME computer and a portable ME computer. I have been using a home network to share printers in this configuration for over two years.

Last week, I upgraded my ME protable to an IBM with Windows 2000 installed on it. From the Windows 2000 computer, I can see the other computers on the home network but can not add or view any of the printers installed on either the XP or ME computers.

How did you finally resolve your problem?

    Thanks. ron

I have read the replies and still have a problem.

    XP Info (Home addition):
    Workgroup: Interwise
    Protocols Installed:
    Clients for Microsoft Networks
    File and Printer Sharing
    QoS Packet Scheduler
    NWLink for NetBios
    NWLInk IPX/SPX
    TCPIP

    Windows 2000 Info
    Domain: Interwise
    Client for Microsoft Networks
    Check Point Secure Remote
Fie and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
    NWLINK NetBios
    NWLINK NetBios
    NETBEUI Protocol
    TCPIP

Objective: Access printers attached to the XP computer from my Windows 2000 computer.

Issue: When logged onto the Windows 2000 computer, I can see and even ping the XP computer. However, when I go to add printers from the Windows 2000 computer, the XP printes do not show.

Issue: I have tried to log onto the XP computer form the 2000 computer. However, I received the following message, "There are currently no logon services available to service the logon request ".

Any assistance would be appreciated. thanks. ron

I hope you are not actually using a DOMAIN controller for a stand alone 5 station network withot a reason?

OK on all computers go to Administrative tools-Services and enable and start "Net Logon" and "Computer Browser ", or confirm they are enabled and running.

    Reboot all that you change!

Set the Administrator password to be the same on all. ( You can change these later if you want).

Log off then back on as Administrator on all. "SAME EXACT SAME PASSWORD ".

While I am thinking of it, after you get this all working get rid of the NWLINK's on all!

Go this far and report back.

    1. The XP and 2000 computer are linked via a Linksys router.

    2. I have added a userid onto the XP computer with the same userid and password as the one which I use on the 2000 computer.

    3. I do not know where / how to enable and start Net Logon and Computer Browser. Please advise.

    4. I have re-botted the XP computer and attempted again (without success) to add printers from the 2000 computer.

    5. I also found that I had a backup administrator ID setup on the 2000 computer of which I also changed the password to be the same as my primary password.

    6. I have been able to log onto the 2000 computer from XP computer (if this helps in debugging).

    Ron.

You only have a part done. So you now have the User name and password the same on both, and both are logged on with these, correct?

    Control panel-Administrative tools-Services.

Look for "Net Logon" and "Computer Browser "confirm they are enabled and started. If not Rt click and go to properties on each and you will see a way to enable and start.

You actually would not need the "Net Logon" if you had no DOMAIN but as yet I don't know if you do, do you?

Out for dinner for an hour or so. Check back then.

rberman - if you are really running a domain then you have a problem with no solution. XP-home cannot take part in a domain. The ability was taken out by Microsoft. For domains, you must use XP-pro.

    10 dad gum 4!!!

I didn't even think of that! Thanks Newt!

Now we do nothing untill we find out if in fact it is set up with DOMAIN.

Alltho the below seems to rule it out, I assume by logon he means browse to and or copy files :
