    ----------------------I need HELP !--------------------

    NEWT,
I'm sorry about making a new thread, but my previous thread kind of took off in the wrong direction before I could get started on solving my problem and I'm not real good at remembering things when there is so many posts in one thread.
I have a hard time following directions on paper, but I don't have a problem with hands on.

I am still having bad problems with my system taking forever to get on the I-net or to get into my email. Anytime that I have my email open and then close it and then reopen the email again,it takes no time at all, same goes for jumping on the net, once I am on the net and close out to go back to my desktop and my Icons, I can click back on IE and the speed is very fast.....

BUT, when I shut my system down and have to reboot, it takes forever to get in the email and to get on the net.

I went to my Control Panel and removed the MS patch #Q811493 as was suggested by BOBBO on my previous thread. After removing that patch, shut the system down and rebooted and I am still having the problem.

    NEWT,
I went to START/RUN/Typed in cmd, a black screen came up and says: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] and then under that it says:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Chris>

At the end of that, I typed in: ipconfig/all for it to say -

    C:\Documents and Settings\Chris>ipconfig/all

This gave me a lot of information, but I don't know where to go from there. At the bottom of all this info. that just came up, it says:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Chris>

Should I type anything after this ? If so, WHAT ?

I copied down the addresses that you told me to. Now, where do I type these addresses at ? I don't understand how or where you typed in your c:\ping-results.txt and where did the Ping 166.82.1.3 come from.

I don't understand this at all. I'm sorry about all of the trouble, but I am lost at this point.

I am not good at all with any abbreviations concerning a computer, but I am trying my best to learn it.

Newt, Thanks for the help so far, but can you walk me thru this the rest of the way step by step or if anyone else has any suggestions

When the internet is taking a long tome to connect, does the connection status sit there saying "Loging onto network" for ages?

NO, it just takes forever to come up. I don't have any messages or pop-ups, just takes lots of time.

    A shot in the dark....

In Internet Explorer, click on Tools\Internet Options\Connections. Then click the "settings" and "LAN Settings" options amd make sure you don't have a check mark in "Automatically detect Settings ".
    If you do, remove it.
Should you have a check mark in either or both and this solution of removing it/them not work, retrace these steps and place a check mark back in these boxes.
    Hope this helps.

DR - no problem. We all have different learning styles.

If you try the fix Barbara-Ann suggested and it doesn't help, post back and we'll go from there.

And by the way, the behavior of the DOS window after it finished with the Ipconfig information was perfectly normal. It just returned to a ready mode and waited to see if you wanted anything else.

I really appreciate the replies and suggestions.

    Barbara-Ann,
I went thru the steps that you posted:
Click on I-Net Explorer/Tools/I-net Options/Connections Tab/ clicked on "LAN Settings ", all boxes were un-checked. I tried checking them and un-checking them and either one made a difference. I now have all of the boxes in LAN Settings un-checked.
I could not click on "Settings" button under "Connections" Tab, the button would not high-light to be able to click in.

I am willing to try almost anything as long as I have steps to follow.

    Newt,
I was hoping that I wouldn't offend you in any way, because I couldn't follow the directions and understand what you were talking about, I had to let you know that I didn't know what you were talking about or we would still not be getting anywhere.
I hope that one day I will be able to know what all abbreviations are for and I hope that one day that I can come on here and give advice, instead of asking for it all the time. I have been taking a class on Microsoft Word & Excel and a typing class. I believe that you must have an interest in something before you can learn it and I diffenantly have an interest in computers and what & how they work, so maybe one day I can pick up on some of this.

If I can't get this problem solved, I guess that I will juat go back and do a "Restore" on it. I hope someone can solve this problem so that I don't have to do that.

I want to say also, that I'm not in a real big hurry, so if there is something that may take a while, that will be OK.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, even though they didn't work, it was a try.
    Please keep the suggestions coming.

I sure do hope that someone can come up with something, cause I don't know what to do next.

I do know that I have this problem under my Dad's name, my Mom's name, and under my name. My Mom and Dad's settings never get messed with at all and it is very slow trying to Log on under their name, so I know that its not domething thst I had messed up on my settings.

I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks in Advance.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    And 5 hours later.................

I think that I have the stand-by mode problem fixed:::
I left clicked on START/CONTROL PANEL/Performance & Maintenance, and then under "or pick a Control Panel iCon" , clicked on iCon W/ "sytem" wrote next to it the "System Properties" screen popped up. I then clicked on the "Advanced" Tab and then looked a little over 1/2 way down, under "Start up & Recovery ", clicked on "settings" button. All I did on that screen was go under "system start-up ", there are 2 boxes with to check/un-check options next to 2 quwstions:

    1) time to display list of operating system
    2) time to display recovery options when needed

both of these were already checked and all I did was lower the time from 10 seconds, down to 5 seconds.

I also went to Start/Control Panel/Performance & Maintenance, under "or pick a Control Panel iCon ", clicked on "Power Options" iCon. The Power Options Properties will come up. On the "Power Schemes" tab, there are some settings and questions, My PC is sat up like this:

under "power schemes ", I can choose from:
    >Home/Office Desk
    >Portable/LapTop
    >Presntation
    >Always On
    >Minimal Power Management
    >Max Battery
*Energy Star..............I have my setting on "Energy Star "

I then have 4 more settings & they are like this:
    >Turn Monitor >>>>>>>>>>>>>>Never
    >Turn Off Hard Disk >>>>>>>>>>After 15 minutes
    >System Stand-by >>>>>>>>>>>After 5 minutes
    >System Hibernates >>>>>>>>>>After 1 hour

Click on the "Advanced" tab, I have a Check mark on:
    >Always show iCon on Taskbar ~checked YES

    >When I press my power button on my computer>>>Stand By
    >When I press the sleep button on my computer>>>>Shut Down

I have the options of >Do Nothing< >Ask Me What To Do< >Stand By< >Hibernate< >Shut Down<, but I'm not quite sure what to set mine at. Mine is sat on Stand by & Shut Down, Would that be OK for my settings?

So far I don't have any stand-by mode problems right now,but I'm not sure if everything is sat up right. A couple of weeks ago lightening had made our power go off a few times during some terrible weather, but I thought that all of my settings would not be changed, but I'm still not sure, but it seems that way. We have a large power supply cord with protection against power outages, etc. It just seems that some of those settings had been shanged and I know that I didn't do it.

I am still having the problem with getting on the net and email being very slow, I sure hope someone can help me. Thanks again !

NEWT, Thanks to you and all the others on here that did their best to help me with my problem. I never did get the problem fixed with my PC, but instead I got some more stuff ******* up trying to fix that problem.

One problem I had was going under Start/Control Panel/Performance & Maintenance and then under "Pick A Task ", I clicked on <Adjust visual effects>.

I tried unchecking all of the bosed and then all of my iCons grew to an extreme size and all of the text was all messed up. Well that also took away all of the boxed that I had just un-checked, leaving me no where to go back and "check" all of the boxes to get me out of this predicament. It was just like being in betweem a rock amd a hard place and no where to go, so I just restored my whole system.

Now since I have a clean system and no problems, maybe you all can kind of "babysit" me and keep me from ******** up again.

Now since I have a problem free system, is there some programs such as SPYBOT, AD-AWARE, ETC. that I should be using ? I tried using the Ad-aware and the Spybot for the pat week and a half, but I never could understand either one. I still had some sort of pop ups, but it was not enough to b!tch about, then again I didn't have hardly any pop ups to begin with. I was just hoping that some of my problems, Spybot could go in and fix, but it didn't.

I would like to get some info on Spybot & Ad-aware on just what exactly they are used for.

    Anyway,Thanks again to everybody.
