Hi everybody: Got a minor (I hope) problem. Each reboot, chkdsk runs on drive D, HDD, slave to C.

Anybody got a clue on: 1. cause? 2. cure?

Maybe not so minor? It's not the scanner. Looking at MS fix, yikes!

Thanks for the help on this, also, it may help cure another drive which won't boot and according to XP Home, partition must be deleted. But that's another issue.

Anyhow, in the KB article 307545, the first step is to boot into the "Recovery Console"

Are they talking about booting from XP CD or is there something else on the machine I don't know anything about?

The extent of my ignorance is astounding!

Do you know how to get into the BIOS ? Most of the time it means hitting the delete (del) key (or f10 key) on your keyboard when the computer is booting. Depending on your computer you have to be fast... Next go to the boot part of your menu and set it to boot from cd.

Thanks Keescpk: yes, I knew that, I just didn't know if there was some other recovery console I didn't know about. Anyhow I tried to do the fix per KB 307545, but recovery console could not find .sam file. So, shot down again. :(

Well, for whatever reason, scan disk just stopped running after every boot. I have no idea why it started or why it quit. Just be thankful, they say.

Thanks Newt: Hey, any way to recover/copy the specific SAM file? The system was not password protected. Like, where did it go? & here's the 64$question: Why? I'm still hoping to recover files from that disk, got another post going on that subject, Reboot been helping, there is still some hope.
