I do not believe you ever had that router hooked up and configured properly for ADSL.

In an earlier post you mentioned using the desktop dial up icon to redial. The dial up software supplied by your isp can be uninstalled and is not needed. In fact, it MUST be ininstalled for the router to work correctly with most adsl isps:

    http://linksys.com/support/support.asp?spid=69

The Linksys has built in config area that will 'dial in' for you automatically. There's no need for the winpoet or other software anymore when using the router.

Also, ALL of the router's ports are firewalled. The DMZ is set via the Advance section of the router control panel only, not the actual ports that the cat5 cables plug into.

    Oh Yeah? Sez Who? ;-)

I make it a rule NEVER to argue with anyone who's name is "Tony" or "Guido ", but in this case, 11 total hours between Verizon and LinkSys... it wasn't properly configured because there were a loser set of chips in bloody unit.

Happily I took it back yesterday (all my troubles seem.... oops... sorry!) and got another of the same model (and batch according to the UPC code!) with Trepidation and hooked it up.... and it configured right out of the box, recognized the ADSL modem as well as the othe computer on the network and then passed the shields-up tests with no colours at all, AND I'm getting a fiarly consistant 95+ KBS download speed as well as a very nice internet surf speed. FTP works just fine.

Advice to anyone purchasing the 4-port LinkSys wired router for DSL/Cable/VPN End Point : If it doesn't configure out of the box TAKE IT BACK AND EXCHANGE IT. Don't make yourself as nuts as I did for so long a time trying to make it work. They have lots of 'em.

BUT... the main thing for me is that it's up, it's working, and I'm gone.

    Thanks to all.....

    Vince

TonyT- you were right on. Trash that ISP software and Linksys Tech Support would have said the same.

Vince - you were a kick - too bad you departed at way less than optimal setup. Not to worry - glad you are happy with 50% performance.

    ;)

Glad all is well now. I guess you learned the hard way, but heck, that's how most of us learn about these machines!

btw, had you disrespected me I would have had no choice but to set up a chat between you and my good buddy here!

    Linksys & Firewalls

    Hi all,

And my genuine thanks to Newt (et al) for more of my ongoing education here. I think I learn more from this website than reading any two bit peice of sh** manual or book. Please do keep posting as it is genuinely appreciated.

So anyhow, IMHO Linksys *****. I will never buy a peice of their hardware again. After my third router nightmare with them, including avery manner of surprise hardware/firmware glitches (serious stuff like opening one port opens ALL ports or shutting down one IP shuts down the whole network or dropping the WAN connection outright upon LAN DHCP connect) I will NEVER (well...I'll try) buy a Linksys P.O.S. again.

Their tech support is lousy, their hardware is lousy, and their competitors are doing it right (or at least better) for only about 10% more retail cost.

IMHO, next time buy D-Link or Netgear. (no problems yet with these guys)

    Ok, I'm done ranting

    Have a nice day all...
    Nate

    50% Aye?

Well, when it comes to Virii and routers ( and keyboards and wee muggies as pee on ye) some stong verbiage is to be expected and condoned, innit?

Just wanted to second SudoTech's comment about the depth of knowledge and the unstinting willingness to not only share same but to ask the pertinent question that solves "Ye Olde Pizzle" (ahh...puzzle... ) Youse lads and lassies are the absolute best, and I thank you all.

    ................

Aye, 'at's me, the sod with the grey beard and the vacuous expression.

When I was in service, the Chief Bos'un was often heard to comment that "That laddie will make a wunnerful Admiral some day... he's no got a brain cell as works!" Ah, 'tis a shame they had no appreciation for me finer qualities. (I'm sure I've a few about somewhere)

    ................

Now, as for the "50% configured" remark, I'd love to explore this but perhaps we should take it to another forum? How sayeth the ForuM-om?
