I am currently running Win ME and have had problems with my computer since the time I purchased it in 2001. Problems such as excessive error messages, freeze-ups, slow speeds, windows opening and/or closing without demands... almost as if it were possessed! I have been told by HP to do a variety of things, including installing and using a virus detecter program, which I did and my computer does not and has never had a virus. The support people at HP have basically told me that it is not the computer, but the operating system (fyi: they don't support software). They claim it is very unstable and that I must upgrade to another. They suggested Win XP. My questions are:
    1. Do you think that Win XP will resolve my problems, and if so, 2. Which XP is most beneficial for me to use? - I am a student and I do a lot of work on the internet, plus I have MS Office XP Professional that I like very much. Whether that is related to Win XP in any way, I do not know.
    3. What will I need to complete the upgrade properly? I have an HP Pavilion 7845.

 Thank you for your help

    First XP will upgrade ME.

Here by upgrade I mean install on top of and keep all installed software and settings.

This is contrasted by a clean install where you backup you ME stuff and format and do a clean install then reinstall all software.

If you have problems that you cannot fix in ME you had better do a clean install.

If you have problems that cause ME to freeze reboot or page faults or invalid ops, these will cause XP upgrade to fail and render ME unusable.

So my advice do not upgrade, but do a clean install.

Read this link! There is much info here and links to XP compatability checkes etc.

As for which version, absolutly no "HOME" get Pro!

In answer to you direct email.

Yes I am saying as long as you have problems with ME that cannot be fixed you should not upgrade but do a clean install.

And yes you will need to backup all data and settings so that you can restore them after a clean install. Yes you will have to install all apps after a clean install.

You don't want to transfer these problems to XP do you? Even if they didn't stop you from upgrading

So here are a couple of helpful sites:

    PCPitStop rediness test
    http://www.pcpitstop.com/xpready/xptests.asp

    The upgrade advisor
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp

As for the above UPGRADE ADVISOR it needs to pass this test even if you are going to do a clean install. Here the UPGRADE means general rediness. Here you would look closer at hardware.

    Good luck

    mike

By having Windows ME they are possibly 100% correct.

    I agree with mflynn here.

Upgrading what appears to be a VERY unstable and troubled system may not fix a thing and may even cause more problems. And only leave you with a more unstable system than you already have.
