Just went through the searches and can't find a proper solution so am posting my problem.

    I'm using OE5 and running Win 98.

    2 things have been happening.

    1. 2 or 3 times a day, I can't delete from the inbox. I have to shut the computer down and reboot. Then I can delete for awhile, but then same thing happens.

    2. Less frequently I can't open the inbox at all and get a "not enough memory" message. I have to shut down.

What is my problem? This didn't use to happen. I have taken everything out of my start up folder and am running nothing extra.

    Please help

Also, I forgot to add ... one more issue.

When i highlight an item, the item opens in a bottom window.
How can I delete mail without opening it?

    Thanks again.

First, the bottom window is called the preview pane. You have to turn off the preview pane. In OE, view, layout, uncheck the preview pane. With the preview pane, you cant highlight a mail without it opening below..

Your inbox may be corrupt. Move any mail in your inbox you want to keep. Close OE. Then start, find, look for "inbox.dbx ". If you only have one OE identity, when it finds the inbox. Right click and delete. It will be regenerated when you open OE again. The deleted folder may also be corrupt. Do the same to it.

How many messages do you have in your folders, inbox and other folders? Have you tried compressing the folders? Select the inbox and then go to the file menu and then folders, choose compact folder.
If you have alot of messages in your folders it can slow things down. There is a size limit in OE. If you go beyond that limit it can cause problems.
aleekat is right, disable the preview pane. If your messages are automatically opening in the preview pane, you can get a virus easily.
