I am having two problems with IE / Outlook which strangely both seemed to start when I left my computer on when I went on holiday for a week!

Firstly all my emails have a subject but the body of the email is an attachment which I have to open like an attachment. I can't find any setting that makes that happen. I have upgraded to Outlook express 6 and it makes no difference.

Secondly my java seems to have stopped working with all sorts of horrible error messages. Everything seems to be anabled ok in the IE settings. When I tried to upgrade to the latest version of Java from the Sun website it just throws up error messages and won't install!

Help ... my computer is going mad and so am I!

    I am running IE6 on WIN2000.

    Peter :(

exec15--What happens when you send yourself an email? Is the message still received as an attachment? Perhaps one person is sending you emails that are only attachments? A lot of people forward all sorts of silly stuff as attachments.
If the above does not help, pursue the following.
I understand you can still read the attachments, correct? What file extension do they have?
If you cannot open the attachments, perhaps in OE Tools|Options|Security tab, you have the box checked for "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened... "? If so uncheck it.
As far as Java is concerned, perhaps try the latest MS Virtual Machine (MS version of Java). It runs natively on IE. You cannot get the latest version from MS any more due to patent and other business reasons, but you can get it here

    Thanks Jim for the suggestions.

All emails are treated the same. I seem to have managed to change something so there is no content or attachment now! The same happens for all emails from all users.

I tried the Java download and it wouldn't update as it said it was a protected component and any upgrades had to be from a later release - did the java link you gave me have the latest release on it?

Any other suggestions gratefully received. I am starting to think i might have to completely re-install win2000 but that is so drastic!

Have you tried the Internet Explorer Repair tool?
You might try going to the tools menu in OE and click on options and then the read tab, put a check in read all messages in plain text. Click apply and okay.
Also if you are using the preview pane try turning that off by going to the view menu and then layout. Take the check out of show preview pane.

All of the preview pane options are greyed out - is this normal? How do I get to the IE repair tool? The text message option seems to make no difference.....

    1) Repair Tool--Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools|System Information|Tools|Internet Explorer Repair Tool|Wait. Reboot.
    2) Perhaps you already have the latest version of MS Java installed. It is version 3810. Test by going to a MS-DOS Prompt, type jview, click Enter. The top line should tell you what version of MS Java you have.

Since you are using Win 2000, to find your version of VM:

If you are running Windows NT® 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP

On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Run.
    Type: cmd
At the command prompt, type: jview
If a message displays information about Java, you have the Microsoft VM installed on your computer.
If a message displays 'Jview' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file, you do not have the Microsoft VM installed on your computer.

Also, depending on which Service Pack you have installed (none, SP1, SP2, or SP3 the update for the MS Virtual Machine will be different.

You should check the MS link above to find it. Also, you might want to read this:

JayT36--Do you confirm that what you can download from MS is a full free-standing installation of Virtual Machine rather than only an update to an existing installation?

It depends. If you are using Win98 the download is 5.1 Mb in size and is version 3810 full install. If it is Win 2000 SP2 or SP3 then it is 2.3 Mb in size and was posted April 8, 2003.

And, unless I am mistaken it is Win 2000 we are dealing with here?

I have fixed the outlook attachments to email problem by re-installing win2000 (not full re-install - the obne which leaves all the software still working). That is now working as it was before - normally.

The java problem still wont go away. jview doesnt work at either an msdos prompt - it asked me for arguments etc.... and it also didnt run from the start/run command.

I seem to be now habving a problem with installing / uninstalling other programs....getting disc full errors even though i have 25GB left on my c drive! Maybe this is why java wont install.

Just a couple of questions. Exactly what are the error messages you are getting? Are you using Sp1, Sp2, or Sp3 in Win 2000? Have you done routine maintenance recently, i.e., defragged and run (is it chkdisk or scandisk in Win 2000?)
The Java Machine updates mentioned above only work in SP2 and Sp3.
