W2K with 512 RAM, no applications running, Task Manager shows 100% CPU usage. The only process using any significant CPU cycles is 'services'. I've done a complete virus scan, and gone through and stopped all running services except for those normally required by Windows.

    What could be causing this?

Gary lots of things could be causing this. The easiest way to delete start up files is a program called reg cleaner...it is freeware and it works great! Just go to the start up programs tab and press delete on whatever you don't need. Just because an application isn't running doesn't mean there isn't a million other running processes. This site Reg Cleaner

The best way to check to see if a start up file is needed is to check this websiteStart up files which basically lists every start up file ever, it's function, and if it is needed or not.

On top of this Spyware is a very common reason computer resources get gobbled up. If you have not checked for spyware do that immediatly before doing anything else. The program for this is called ad aware...Ad aware

I hope this is helpful and feel free to drop me a line at ms1730@ship.edu if you need any more assistance,

    Matthew

If you check CPU % while virus scanning, it will show 90-100%.

    Anything unusual in Event logs?
