I want my Folders to display their contents, via the "VIEW" menu, in the "DETAILS" format as Default.
Currently, even though I have regularly selected "LIST" or "DETAILS ", these folders display as "TILES ".
FOLDER OPTIONS do not appear to offer such a choice.

    reblak. hi

    See this post

I think it will answer your question - it worked for me when certain folders insisted on showing tiles.

Thank you PeteC and Artaxus. I fear I do not feel confident of my "interpretation" of the advice. I need dot and comma instruction, else I will make a disasterous mistake. If there is room for a misunderstanding or procedural error, I will make it!!

I cannot expect that, so thanks very much for the help, but...

Hey - we don't give up that easily.

Here is Chapter and Verse - dot and comma if you prefer :

Go here and download bags8000.reg - the link brings up the download dialogue - no need to go searching - and save it to disk.

    Then :

Start > Run > type in 'regedt32' - without the quotes

    Registry Editor opens.

Click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER. then Software, then Microsoft .... until you get to:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU

Highlight BagMRU in the left hand pane then File > Export and save the Registry string in, say My Documents as BagMRU

Do the same for the next entry Bags

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags

Right click on BagMRU in the left hand pane and select Delete
    Repeat for Bags

Now go to the bags8000.reg file and right click on it and select Merge and Ok

The bags8000 registry file is merged with the Registry and, hopefully, after a reboot, the 'detailed' folder view will be available.

If there are problems simply merge the two deleted registry files from the back up in My Documents by right clicking and selecting Merge.

    Go for it!

    Thank you Pete C!!

I did what you said. My only worry was that only the download offered 'merge' (which I did not do - I saved to a file). Later when I called up the 'bags8000.reg' I was offered what I assumed was the same thing "Are you sure you want to add the info in 'bags8000' to the registry ", so I clicked yes.

On reboot the Folders opened to TILES as before. So I opened a few folders and selected DETAILS in each case. Rebooted again and, sure enough, those folders opened as DETAILS !

So I slogged thro 'C' for an hour and changed (almost) all to DETAILS. On reboot the Folders open to DETAILS!!!

That was hard work, but so worth it. Thanks :) :) :)

PS. Seeing as you are so clued up, can you help on this one: A few days ago I formatted my 40Gb HD. This time (!!) I made 2 partitions (I intended to put a 2nd copy of XP Pro in the second partition), made myself Administrator and did the password bit. I installed XP Pro and other stuff and did all the Win Updates. Then I discovered that I could not find any trace of the 2nd partition. My RAM is showing only 256 instead of 512, so half my RAM must be allocated to the missing partition.
I used the XP disk to format and to install. Any ideas?

    John,

Delighted to hear that you have solved that problem :D

For future reference you could have saved youself a lot of work by setting up one directory as you want it, i.e. Details and :

Tools > Folder Options > View and click 'Apply to all folders'.

Your second problem will require some thought and I'm out for the evening shortly, but I suggest you post it as a new thread, say 'Lost partition and half memory'. This way others will see it - buried in this thread they will not.

I'll come back to you when I can - busy w/e ahead!

    John,

When you partitioned your drive did you format both partitions?

Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management.

What do you see? One partition plus unallocated space (or something similar) ? If so right click on unallocated space and select Format.

Memory is not allocated to partitions - it is 'computer wide', regardless of the no. of physical drives or partitions you may have. If only half the RAM is being reported then there is a problem somewhere.

Do you have 1 x 512 Mb module or 2 x 256 Mb modules ? If the latter remove each in turn - with the PC turned off at the mains and relocate. If only 256 Mb shown on boot up, close down the PC, switch off at mains.

Remove one module - reboot. If the PC beeps at you and refuses to boot the odds are that the module is faulty - if it boots OK and shows 256 Mb RAM then the module is fine. Repeat the exercise with the other module.

If both memory modules are OK - or you have a single 512 Mb module - then I've no idea what the problem is and suggest you post that problem as a new thread.
