    good test side!

I came upon this test side for windows and it turned out to be pretty good and refreshing( since its tests are different from grc.com, pcflank.com and sygate.com ):

    http://www.securewall.co.uk/Testingzone/testingzone.htm

Here are some of my notes:

    1. The Antivirous gateway tests are quite useful and surprisingly, Norton failed one of the tests(?).

    2. The intrusion test for win2k is revealing. It showed my that my system isn't as secure as I thought(!).

    3. The firewall test is supposed to be the best feature but I haven't figured out how to get the result back yet.

Wait for your comments after the tests. :p

    New to me .....

    Hi

Just looked at the link to the test site and was very interested.

I note you must register for the tests. Hope you don't mind advising if it is worthwhile - I presume it is but would just like to know a few more details.

I was alarmed to read that Norton failed one thus I may not be as secure as the test results show at Symantec !!!!

I did a browser test at another site - everytime I do it the program has to crash as there are security flaws in IE6 ( despite me having all the patches etc

Would love to know more about these tests & the actions thereafter

The registration is free. And you will evaluate all the tests yourself and post your own opinions.

    >I was alarmed to read that Norton failed one thus I may not be as secure as the test results show at Symantec !!!!

I hope you and more people can confirm it.

    Will act today !

    Hi

I was a soild user of Symantec software BUT just recently I am a little unsure of what job he is doing considering all the ' do a fresh install ' instructions etc PLUS the error notices - cannot confirm Sub. you may not have admin. rights etc - others have this problem to.

I will register with the site later today & do the tests. I will report my NAV result back. Hopefully others will do the same ....... wonder if Symantec keep an eye on forums !

I for one will use their online contact if my system fails the test. If they don't know we are under false security at a price ......
    :(

    Back from testing :

My ISP is only providing a very minimal level of security as they let all in apart from the first Multi test e-mail. The attachment was removed before it reached OE.
Point of Interest - the security is powered by Symantec ( must be a very basic level )

    HTTP tests :

1 & 2 - both detected by Norton without problem.
3 & 4 - I was prompted to open or save - I saved them & then ran a manual Norton scan - he detected infection in both. He did not auto warn when they arrived but would not let me run when saved. Lesson to be learned to double check .zip with a manual scan.

    e-mail scans :

He would not let me open any of the attachments without warning. He did not ( as I was normal with earlier versions ) alert & quarantine on arrival

At least he alerted when I tried to run the programs.

The CLSID ' View me.jpeg ' e-mail - I tried to open it but Windows needed to know the program it was written with etc I saved it & then ran a manual scan & Norton did not detect the infection. It was only when I tried to open it that the infection was reported !

I was protected in all cases but not alerted to the possible infection until I tried to run the programs. Symantec seem to have changed the alerting procedures. I only ever had a few (98se) but it was a major alert on arrival .... now on XP (HE) NIS 2003 it seems that the alerts are only when you try to open etc which is a bit confusing ......

I could not do the Firewall test & some others as they are limited to company use ( due to high demand )

I will go back later to see what tests are left for me to do.

I just did not realise that these test could be done on home PC's -Thanks to you I know now & will be doing some more to make sure.

One thing I do know is that Norton on my desktop is working harding than my ISP version. I would be concerned that others are relying on the online version to intercept this type of thing & it only found ONE. As the site states the Gateway should be more reliable than the software on home PC's.

Hope more test their software - thanks to you I have :)
