I'll have to argue the point people say networkig in XP is easier! 98, to me, was easier than all these headaches...

I, TOO, (it seems alot of people have trouble) have a 3 computer network at home trying to share internet via hub and cable modem.

pca: 2 nics (1 for modem, 1 for lan) xp pro
    pcb: 1 nic xp pro
    pcc: 1 nic xp pro

I'm going to leave pcc out of this to cut down confusion.

If I let the wizards set this newtork up, it seems to work for a couple boots anyway.

I want to change 192.68.0.1 on pca to 10.0.0.1 but when I do (and change ip from auto on pcb to 10.0.0.2 with gateway of 10.0.0.1) nothing works again.

I've discovered on problem causer...if I tell the host machine I don't want Geneic Host Process to act as a server - destination ip of my ISP then nothing works. Why would I want to set my host machine to be a server to m ISP?
And another question, if I shut down internet on the host, ZA reports on the client machine that it was blocked NETBIOS to the machine IP again, my ISP ip address! What's up with that?!

Could somebody PLEASE (patiently) walk me through setting up a home network with pca ip of 10.0.0.1 pcb 10.0.0.2 pcc 10.0.0.3 sharing internet with 10.0.0.1 (which has the modem) and offer settings for ZA? I have user and passwords on all machines and use a workgroup name of WORKGROUP.

    ICS for modem sharing?

And to keep from passing lots of questions your way and answers back leading to more question .......

    Do this.

    1. On each PC, start~run~cmd and then
    ipconfig /all > c:\ip-settings-A.txt (and another for B and C).

    2. Post the contents of each file in here. Make sure the PC is clearly identified.

I'm not entirely sure you can use your 10.0.0.0 address with ICS. With windows XP (and all other versions of windows) when you use their internet connection sharing it forces you to use the 192.168 address, and no other. The reason routers that you buy can work on any network address is because they use NAT protocol, which is a lot more flexable.

Below, please find the resulting file output for your request.
I have X'ed out the last digit(s) of my IP address for security reasons.

As far as the reply above...I can do this if I install NetBEUI can't I? Or is there a way to do it without?

First off forget the 10.0.0xx range.

TAP-OUT is correct ICS wants to use the 192.xx.xx.xx range. Yes it can be changed but it takes several steps to do it which are totally unnessesary here.

The following should fix it if everything else is correct:

On the second NIC in the ICS machine the LAN Nic not the Broadband.

Do this. Disable DHCP and specify the following

    ip= 192.168.0.1

    gateway=68.0.39.1

    dns three entries = 68.10.16.30, 68.10.16.25, 68.9.16.30

Reboot and as I said if everything else is correct, Wah-la!

Now this should allow internet access, but sharing between the computers on the network is a different thing.

Get back to us if access to stations on LAN no workie!

I can't change SYSTEM B to 192.168.0.1 can I? That's what the IP address is on SYSTEM A, as shown in the message with ipcpnfig results.

    I didn't say "SYSTEM B "! I said 2nd NIC in ICS machine which is "SYSTEM A "

Do not bother the COX NIC! It is correct!

In other words the NetGear NIC in "System A ".

But there is an error in my instructions where I say disable DHCP. Actually it is already disabled, so leave the IP add all the other info I told you to the NetGear NIC and it should work!

mflynn - Never used ICS so could be off base here but all I read has the internal host NIC with DNS turned off and nothing configured on it for DNS addresses. And no gateway address either.

I think the poor thing might get confused with those values set on the internal LAN NIC on the host PC.

Joe - NetBeui will certainly allow the local PCs to network and you'd only need to have the workgroup the same on all of them and the PC name different. NetBeui doesn't see IP at all. Pays no attention to it.

But if you are seriously wanting to use 10.x.x.x, as mentioned above you will need to get a hardware router/switch since ICS goes nuts with it. And even if you do get the router and do decide to use 10.x.x.x, stay with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and have each PC using 10.0.0.x or any other address series that is identical in the first 3 octets like 10.10.10.x or 10.11.12.x or whatever.

mflymm, I apologize...I was half asleep when I read 'second' I assumed second computer...my fault!

As far as using NetBeui, how hard is it to set that up? I'd rather use it to keep file and print sharing off tcp/ip.

ICS seems to be working WITHOUT putting the gateway and dns entries...but...
When I go to SYSTEM B and tell it to NOT auto grab an IP and force 192.168.0.2 I no longer can share internet...why?

Once this ICS is solved I'll troubleshoot the LAN. (It seems to be working but not completely as I get ZA alerts still when trying to view or access printer etc...THAT'S NEXT...)

When you put in the static IP address, are you keeping the same subnet mask AND are you putting in the host IP address as the default gateway?

Phew...I swear 98 was much easier!
OK...it seems to be working with manually entered IPs but I can't understand why Remote Desktop asks for internet access with a manually entered IP and it doesn't for an automatic one.
I did notice if I left out the DNS IPs I couldn't share internet with manually entered IPs but could on auto.

Now...since I'm still worried about file/printer sharing even though I have it unbound on the LAN from tcp/ip, is it easy and safer to go with NETBEUI like in 98?
If so, how can I non faultly set that up?

NetBeui is safer for printing. Not hard to set up but sort of obscure on XP.

Go to the Microsoft online help site, pick Advanced, specify XP, use install NetBeui as your search term, and specify to use all in the search. You should get a good how-to on setting it up.

You'll also be told that NetBeui is not supported on XP but don't worry about that. It works fine.

    Hmmmmm

Joe I think I got lost!!!??? Easy for me, my mind is as short as my .......

    Anyways?

First the link I posted above "IS" the steps to install netbeui, here again:
    http://www.pchell.com/support/netbeui.shtml

Do I understand you have/had it working and just wanted to know why it would not work with some alternate settings?

Can you refine you current status? What works, what don't?

What do we need to work on now?

    Mike
