    Greetings to one and all,

    I formatted my C drive last week and while almost everything is back to normal, I have this strange thing happening.

    When startup is finished I have my "C:\Program Files" on my Desktop in a Restore window. I haven't ever had this happen before, it closes ok with the CLOSE button.

    How can I stop this opening up at startup??

    Hi Merlin,

    tnx for your prompt response;

    config.sys has this;

    ticked box DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
    ticked box DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE

    Autoexec.bat has this;

    ticked box @C:\PROGRA~3\GRISOFT\AVG6\bootup.exe
    ticked box SETBLASTER=A22017 D1 T2
    ( no box? ) REM-By Windows Setup-SETSNDSCAPE=C:\WINDOWS
    ( a one line space here )
    ticked box SETSNDSCAPE=C:\WINDOWS

    I have tried to type it exactly as it appears in the Configuration Utility. The parenthesis obviously dont appear. Hope it comes out all right.

    This C:\Program Files on the desktop is one of two things.
    If it is a folder, it will be C:\Windows\Desktop\My Program Files, and the folder C:\Program Files does not exist, than you have a shell folder on a shell folder.
    Or, you have a shortcut to the C:\Program Files folder on your drive. You can check this by right clicking and selecting Properties and it will say it right off.
    In either case if the C:\Program Files folder exists, you can delete it.

    Hi Mark,

    I dont think its a shortcut, and I cant right click, ie, it wont respond to a right click.

    Its small window ( "restore "), with "Program Files" in the title bar at the top.
    In the window it shows all the files in "C:\Program Files" As I understand it , these files are mostly to do with W98, so deleting them would cause a great deal of havic wouldn't it? ( Things like Accessories, Front Page Express, Common Files etc. )

    It looks like it somehow has been added to my startup lists. I have looked at the start up tab in msconfig but there is nothing apparent. Likewise there is nothing in the "Start Menu Programs "

    It doesn't seem to interfere with anything else, but it is puzzling.

    I think you have AVG starting in the registry AND autoexec.bat.

    Hi Merlin,

    Can I just unclick that in the "run>msconfig>startup" tab?

    I'd start by disabling those programs on the Startup tab in MSCONFIG that have C:\Program Files or C:\Progra~1 in the path.

    Disable them one at a time and restart between each one.

    Hi guys,

    Thanks for the advise. I tried unchecking the suggested app's in 'startup' , one at a time but no change.

    Today I read in these pages that I could uncheck every thing EXCEPT
    System tray, Scan Registry, Load Power profiles, Antivirus.

    I added my Sygate firewall to that list, rebooted and hey presto, no "restored window with Programs" on the desktop.

    I am not at all sure which unchecked box did the trick but now it works properly.

    A big thankyou to all who replied to my 'mayday'

    Hi folks,

    I believe I have discovered the problem of my "C:\Program Files" on my Desktop in a minimised window. It has been coming and going for some time now and I have mostly ignored it.

    Today and about 5 weeks ago, I had this startup problem which essentially said that a file called "TEEFER" was not available etc, etc. Click any key to continue. I click any key and the PC turns off !

    I rang my son who uses w98 and he could not "find" any TEEFER in his machine, and it wasn't in mine either. I did a backup of my registry, then re installed a backup registry I made just after the last C drive format job. Now with "find" I discover that TEEFER is part of my Sygate firewall, free version.

    The firewall is now uninstalled, there is no TEEFER in my PC and the "C:\Program Files" is no longer appearing at startup.

    My thanks again to all who offered assistance with this problem.
