His PC is also running extreemly slow which may be related to the error message. he has a P-III celron win 98

I assume he is getting this on boot in DOS before windows.

This is a DOS extender used for running older dos programs. Mostly games.

Cleanup the autoexec.bat and config.sys of all references to this to rid yourself of it.

Then in windows uninstall any games or programs that needed it because they will no longer run and are appearently not running now as evidenced by the error.

Look at windows startups and remove anything pertaining to Dos4gw.

    Thanks flynn
I'll check it out in the next couple of days when i get over his place
I never thought of those files i just looked in the win.ini
But i think he may have bigger problems after it has booted
i run system monitor and it's using 100% straight after bootup
guess that explains why it's super slow, Now thinking of a format
    to clean the **** out.
    thanks again

    Format!!

That is a little drastic for somthing like this!

Cleanup the Windows startups. Uninstall unused or troublesome programs especially games.

In particular, clean up autoexec.bat - it seems there is a load
to a non-existent DOS Legacy sound card driver.

    keats,
I vaguely remember an MS file called cards.exe that might solve this - see if you can find it.
