We have 4 business computers connected via a Linksys 4 port router to a DSL line. Doing searches here has brought up threads that indicate we are safe without additional software firewalls, just depending on the NAT firewall in the Linksys. It was mentioned that the router assigns the IP addresses to each computer. We have them assigned very simple numbers in sequence. Three computers are XP and one is Win2K.

Should I be telling it to assign more complex and/or random IP addresses? Or does it matter?

The router has 2 methods of handling ip's:

Dynamic Routing - the router assigns ip's to each computer on the network.

Static Routing - you configure the network in windows and also configure the router to match the settings you use in windows, you choose the ip's for each machine and they never change.

Both are secure, Dynamic is easiest.

Also, yiou have no need for software firewalls. They are only good for stopping outgoing traffic. Unwanted outgoing traffic comes from spyware or worms. If you have to block outgoing traffic then your network is already compromised. The NAT in the router is all you need.

Thanks, Tony! That article you linked to was good (I especially liked the "GWF" comment on closed files).

Our addresses are static, like I said no fancy number combinations -- just .1, .2, .3 etc. I'll just leave them as is now and quit worrying about it. At a company meeting yesterday (our office ties to the company via the DSL) it was mentioned that one office DIDN'T use a router and a worm came in a destroyed 3 of their computers. Another office like ours has a self-proclaimed "expert" and according to him we should have the router, a hardware firewall, and at least one software firewall. He's a little paranoid, I've always thought. I ordered the XP upgrades for 3 of our computers the same day after he explained how bad XP was and what a mistake it would be to upgrade. I guess he's my "reverse-logic" tech guru -- doing the opposite of what he thinks has worked well in the past. However, I wanted to remove that nagging little question of "...could he be right, this time...? ".

    You did. Thanks again.
