When I hit the download button, the browser screen immediately jumps to a blank screen with a small "icon box" in the upper left hand corner. The URL shows the .exe file name. The box asking for where to download does not come up. I have turned off and on virus protection (such as Black Ice) reloaded IE, rebooted etc....and I'm still not able to properly download. This has just come up in the past few weeks. Any help or ideas as to why this is happening would be greatly appreciated. (My OS is Win95)

    Thank you

Thanks for responding, but nothing I did worked. I even uninstalled IE 5.5 (again!) and still nothing works. No box asking if or where I want to download etc.... It looks like it "downloads" very quickly then this tiny white box with fiqures appears in the upper left corner of a blank page. When I right click on the blank screen and hit Properties, it gives the URL address but list the file as Hyper Text Transfer Protocol.

Don't know if that helps...but thanks for yours!

For example the Weather channel. The address:
    http://www.weather.com/services/desktop.html/?from=wxhomepage

On this page is the download button. I had tried the right key to save as. The download box comes up.Save as type is either "all files" or HTML. after I download. It downloads into C:/Windows/Desktop.....\download.html...I open the folder, then the file which the shortcut looks like a white page with a blue "e" click on that and get the same blank page with the upper left box. here is the actual exe doc. I'm trying to open (this happens though with other sites I'm trying to download from-not just the weather channel)

    http://download.weather.com/web/desktop/install/TWCSetup.exe

thanks for all your help on this!

Your problem is similar to denisaf's IE download problem, caused by an invalid IE plugin. See this thread:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13774&perpage=15&pagenumber=3

Run Regedit and look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension
    - EXPORT the entire Extension key to a reg file as a safety precaution, then DELETE the entire Extension key.

    See if that fixes it.

If you still have the same problem then possibly the Extension key came back. Then you will need to check the Extension key's contents for the name and location of the .dll file (plugin) that is causing the key to return and either UNINSTALL the program that installed the dll file OR rename the dll file, then go back and delete the Extension key again.

    pjl208 Hi

Are you able to download yet?
have you tried IE's repair option yet?
How long has this been going on and is IE5.5 new to you
and I wonder where you got it?
do you have a third party download manager ,if so disable browser monitoring, disable anything (third party)that monitors IE and security, simply useing the close program diolog box is not enough.
    Another thing to try

    ========
This article describes the steps to disable the third-party Tool Bands and Browser Helper Objects features that you installed for use with Internet Explorer. You may have to disable these features when you have to troubleshoot Internet Explorer problems.
    MORE INFORMATION
To disable the Tool Bands and Browser Helper Objects features:
Close all instances of Internet Explorer, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    Double-click Internet Options.
    Click the Advanced tab.
Under Browsing, click to clear the[ ] Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart) check box.
    Restart Internet Explorer.
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=298931
    =========
    while you're there uncheck(if checked)
[ ]enable install on demand (other)

I forget if IE5.5 has those ? forum?

    Cannot Download with Internet Explorer
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;299328

Would be a good idea to delete tifs index dat, you could close Ie
open internet options from control panel,(im not familur with win 95.) on that first page hit the settings button then move folder
move it to o say you're desktop reboot when prompted go back and move it again back to windows directory..
    later get Spyder:
    http://www.fsm.nl/ward/
adaware and spybot , since you cant download try this online scan:
    http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php

pjl208--Both Alice and I have suggested you delete the Extension key in Registry. Have you tried that?
P.S. I am getting a little confused. Your most recent post says you can download from the Weather Channel, but that the download is corrupt. I thought your problem was that you could not download in the first place.

    Jim,

I think some confusion exists because the "download link" on that first weather.com url was not a direct link to an exe file but rather to another webpage (html file).

    pjl208:

If I understand you correctly you are NOT able to download TWCSetup.exe which is the target of the following link you posted:

    http://download.weather.com/web/desktop/install/TWCSetup.exe

If you are hesitant about editing the registry, maybe you can tell us what programs you have added recently that might explain the problem.... try uninstalling the last program you added, and work backwards from there.

    Lonny,

On the first, NO, IE5.5 does not have an "enable third party browser extensions" option check box iunder Advanced, Browsing. The mskb article stated that it applies to IE6.

IE 5.5 DOES have an "install on demand" checkbox which I have UNchecked for security reasons.

    Yippee - it works!!!

Jim, Alice, Lonny: Thank you so much. I did delete the extension in reg. as you suggested, but it kept coming back. Alice, you said something about if it comes back look at what program is making it come back...it had something to do with NetZip-which I have had on my computer for over 2 years, but for whatever reason, deleting that and running IE Internet tools did the trick.

I want to thank all of you for your help! Amazing!!!

    Pam

    Hi Pam,

Glad you're back in the downloading business!

Sorry you had to uninstall NetZip. You could look for a substitute program. If you need it to zip and unzip files, I have used WinZip for years. If it is a downoad manager, I don't use one but maybe someone else has a suggestion.
