RhonB--Regret I could not be of more help. As mentioned, happily I do not have the problem, and I do not have msscript.ocx. But, as also mentioned, you are not alone. Someone is going to figure this one out.
Did you run a Find again to see if you now have msscript.ocx? If still not on your PC, here is a site that says it offers it (however, I could not find it)
    http://members.aon.at/dfg/products/downloads_e.htm
Scroll to the bottom. When installed, do the regsvr32 thing.
And it won't hurt to install Visual Basic, if you not already have it.

Passing the ball back to PrairieLily.
EDIT--I see that PrairieLily has suggested Visual Basic as well. Beat me by two minutes!!
    Go PrairieLily!! ;)

Lily (& Jim,) -my new nicknmes for you-

Lily, both your suggestions got the Ok, - which set my heart a thumpin', but it still hangs at download ....

but the good news is...I found out how to cut and paste a file name into that little run box thingy..clever me!

Now I am off to try Jim's suggestions...

thank you both for sticking with me. If I knew how to put a smiley thing here, I would.

haha now THAT's an easy one and I will try to beat Jim to that lol as long as you are set to show smileys just put a colon and then a parenthesis ) and it will show a smiley face. And I am honoured to be in the same technical arena as Jim :)

Rhonb, I am trying to decide where your critical update is hanging ... does it tell you 0% ?? does it start the update at all??

Lily, I used to have a problem with the scanning for updates. It would stop at 0%....I overcome that problem, I don't remember how though....now it does the complete scan and takes me to the updates I need. I click on install, and the dialoge web page comes up with the user agreement, which I accept, which takes me to the download.....the little computer icon lights up (to the left of the box) and I am instructed to wait for downloading.....is 8 hours long enough to wait? (I think so....).....and that's all that happens!..I look at it, and it looks back at me..

Jim, I couldn't find the Regsver32 file either on the site you gave me, but i have contacted the company, who say," ask and they will find! "...I am now trying to work out how to download basic script, and my brain is starting to ache....to me it's the same as putting me in an operating theatre withh a trolley full of surgical instruments, and telling me to go ahead and do the bloody operation!
    Lead on Mc Duff!

Goodness Gracious me!....look what you have taught me to do!!.....this is the page from the troubleshooter, that describes my problem exactly.... except I can't get past the first step....is this any help to you Lily & Jim?

    Please re-register the following files:
    regsvr32 msscript.ocx
    regsvr32 dispex.dll
    regsvr32 vbscript.dll
    regsvr32 scrrun.dll

    1. Click "Start," and then click "Run. "
    2. Type regsvr32 msscript.ocx in the "Open" box and click "OK. "
    3. Repeat for dispex.dll,vbscript.dll, and scrrun.dll.

Next, make sure file (open) type .JS is properly associated:
    1. In Control Panel, click "Folder Options," and then click "File Types. "
    2. Locate the .JS extension and click "Advanced. "
    3. Make sure the "Application to perform action" field contains: C:\WINDOWS\System32\WScript.exe "%1" %* This is for a Windows XP computer. For Windows 2000 substitute the C:\WINDOWS\ with C:\Winnt\. For Windows 98 and Windows Millenium Edition substitute this: C:\WINDOWS\System\ for C:\Windows\system32.

Rhonb, I sure wish I could just sit down with you at your computer and tell you. You said you did not get past step one?? Before you do anything MAKE SURE the instructions you follow are for YOUR operating system .. Windows 98 .. watch you don't try to follow instructions especially for Windows XP. Once you confirm that ...the basically step 1, 2 and 3 are just having you do similar to what I had you do with the two files ... you are to do the same for these 4 files. okay .. that's easy now!!

    Next ...

Yes Lily it is definately for windows 98 SE. Definately.

And yes, I did type the first file name as required. (regsvr32misscript.ocx) and I got,and am still getting, this message....

    ! Regsvr32 loadlibrary ( "msscript.ocx ") failed GetLast error returns 0x00000485

I just downloaded the basic 6.0 and did the search (find) for regsver32 and it said....cannot find the file regsvr32 (or one of it's components) make sure the filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.

"required Libraries?" is that a clue?

Anyway, I am sure you are fed up with all this for today (tonight?) and my head is spinning, which means i probably can't absorb much more for information now. I hope I haven't exhausted your kindness, and if you think of anything else that I can try after you have had a break, I hope you will perservere with me.

RhonB--Let's go back to that trouble shooting window. The suggestions there sound OK, but your report on what happened could indicate you are not typing correctly into the Run line. It should be (using msscript.ocx as an example)
regsvr32 msscript.ocx then click OK. If that works, do the others. Note the space between regsvr32 and msscript.ocx and the correct spelling for all.
This thread has gotten to be so long I cannot remember what has been tried and what not, or just what your problem is now. I feel you have told us that you can run the Windows Update scan, but now cannot download the files. There is an outside chance this might help
    http://www.valink.com/jeep/IE/Unable.to.Download.Files.htm
You could also try cleaning out your Temporary Internet Files folder.
P.S. Earlier you mentioned that you were looking for the regsvr32.exe file from one of the links I suggested, especially the Visual Basic link. That was not the file I was hoping those links might provide, but rather msscript.ocx.

RhonB-HELLO JIM......I HAVE TRIED TO REPLY THIS WAY, IN THE HOPE THAT IT WILL BE CLEARER TO US BOTH ABOUT WHAT I HAVE DONE SO FAR...-Let's go back to that trouble shooting window. The suggestions there sound OK, but your report on what happened could indicate you are not typing correctly into the Run line. It should be (using msscript.exe as an example)
regsvr32 msscript.ocx then click OK. If that works, do the others. Note the space between regsvr32 and msscript.ocx and the correct spelling for all.YES I DID THAT, CAREFUL OF SPACING AND SPELLING, BEFORE AND AFTER I CLEANED OUT THE TEMP FILES.. STILL GOT THE SAME ERROR MESSAGE AS I DID WHEN I TRIED IT ALL THE OTHER TIMES. THAT IS THE FIRST STEP ACCORDING TO THE TROUBLESHOOTING PAGE, BUT IT DOESNT WORK, SO I CAN'T GO ON TO THE OTHER STEPS .
This thread has gotten to be so long I cannot remember what has been tried and what not,LILY GAVE ME SOME DIFFERENT FILENAMES TO TRY, AND I PASTED THEM DIRECTLY FROM HER POST......I ALSO DONLOADED SCRIPT 5.6, AND BASIC SCRIPT 6....... or just what your problem is now.THE PROBLEM IS THE SAME. THE "UPDATE" DOWNLOAD HANGS, AND WHEN I TRY TO FOLLOW THE TROUBLESHOOTING INSTRUCTIONS, THE SAME ERROR MESSAGE APPEARS.....THIS IS THE MESSAGE.....LOADLIBRARY ( "MSSCRIPT.OCX ") FAILED GetLastError returns 0x00000485...... I feel you have told us that you can run the Windows Update scan,YES. but now cannot download the files.YES, THAT'S RIGHT. I CAN'T DOWNLOAD THE UPDATES. There is an outside chance this might help
http://www.valink.com/jeep/IE/Unabl...nload.Files.htm I WENT THERE AND IT IS TOO ADVANCED FOR ME TO UNDERSTAND UNFORTUNATELY.I AM WAY OUT OF MY DEPTH THERE TRYING TO SEE WHAT I CAN DO AND HOW IT APPLIES TO MY PROBLEM. SORRY.
You could also try cleaning out your Temporary Internet Files folder.YES, I DO THAT NEARLY EVERY DAY, AND DID IT AGAIN TODAY BEFORE ENTERING THE FILE NAME IN THE RUN BOX,FOR ANOTHER TRY. i ALSO DID WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT THE INTERNET REPAIR TOOL I THINK IT WAS, A FEW DAYS AGO.NO JOY THERE EITHER.
P.S. Earlier you mentioned that you were looking for the regsvr32.exe file from one of the links I suggested, especially the Visual Basic link. That was not the file I was hoping those links might provide, but rather msscript.ocx.I JUST WENT BACK THERE BEFORE WRITING THIS, AND COULDN'T FIND THE MSSCRIPT.OCX FILE SO I HAVE WRITTEN TO THEM AND ASKED THEM TO FIND IT FOR ME.(WHICH THEY SAY THEY CAN DO FOR ANYONE WHO CAN'T FIND WHAT THEY NEED).
AND THAT'S WHERE WE ARE!.....PRETTY MUCH STUCK AT THE FIRST STEP OF THE SUGGESTIONS ON THE WINDOWS TROUBLESHOOTING PAGE!....IN THE MEANTIME, I STILL GET THE "CRITCAL UPDATES POP UP REMINDER EACH MORNING, AND FOLLOW THE LINKS TO DOWNLOAD, AND ALL GOES OK UNTIL THE DOWNLOAD HANGS.....I CAN DOWNLOAD ANYTHING ELSE I FANCY WITHOUT PROBLEMS, IT'S JUST THE UPDATES THAT WON'T WORK.

I dd a groups.google.com search on your error message,
    LOADLIBRARY ( "MSSCRIPT.OCX ") FAILED GetLastError
and found a few newsgroup posts, including:

    From: harryh (hayford@optusnet.com.au)
Subject: Re: WU hangs in download dialog ( 0% )

    Robert

You are correct - a search for the module failed to find anything.
Thanks also for the link to the article.

    That Microsoft kb article, http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;EN-US;Q249873
    says this:
So, all that means is that you DON'T HAVE the MSSCRIPT.OCX file on your system! Based on the Newsgroup reply, not everyone has that file so in that case it is not necessary to register it! Just ignore that error message and try registering the other files.

Hello Alice. Thank you so much for all that searching! my eyes nearly fell out of my head when i read your post..impressed!

Welshjim told me that he didn't have that file, but i didn't take that to mean to ignore it and just keep going with the others .....told you my knowledge was below basic..

I did everything suggested in your links except for the last one, because that was for IE4 and I have 6....Removed everything that they suggested (if I had it) cleaned out everything twice!

I don't know what a proxy sever or firewall is or where or how to find out if I have them.......anyway, I did what I understood to do, and re started the computer just in case that performed some miracle....cleaned the keyboard and kissed the monitor in case it helped, and went to the udates.....no happy ending here I'm afraid.....still hangs.

HOWEVER....i did try re-registering the files agin, starting from number 2 file and had no problems(no error messages) until I got to the next step...and this is it.....

    .

Next, make sure file (open) type .JS is properly associated:WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?(IT MIGHT AS WELL BE IN GREEK)

    2. Locate the .JS extension and click "Advanced. "I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS MEANS.

3.in the control panel click 'folder options'FOUND THAT..... and then click "File Types. "THERE IS NO 'FILE TYPES' THERE.! (A LOT ABOUT FILES, BUT NOTHING THAT SAYS 'FILE TYPES'

    3. Make sure the "Application to perform action" field contains: For Windows 98 and Windows Millenium Edition substitute this: C:\WINDOWS\System\ for C:\Windows\system32. DIDN'T GET THIS FAR, BUT WILL I GET TO THIS EVENTUALLY?....presuming i ever understand steps 2 & 3

A proxy server is a site that inserts itself between you and the websites you want to access, usually to filter out unwanted material or to make your surfing anonymous. Proxomitron is one example: http://www.proxomitron.org

You can tell if you are connecting to the internet through a proxy server by checking in the IE Tools, Internet Options, Connection tab. Settings button for your dialup (or Lan Settings, , if you're on cable/DSL) then see if "use proxy server" is checked or not.

A "software" firewall is a program like Norton Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm or Kerio PF that checks for incoming (and sometimes outgoing) internet traffic. Usually people with high-speed DSL or cable modem connections have a firewall, but sometimes people on dialup also have one installed. You would probably know if you've installed a firewall. I'm assuming it would start when Windows starts and be listed in Start | Run | Msconfig | Startup and maybe have an icon in the systray (area near the clock)

How are you connecting to the internet? Regular dialup connection? If so you really don't need a firewall although some people would disagree.

You are referring to the following:
Next, make sure file (open) type .JS is properly associated:
    1. In Control Panel, click "Folder Options," and then click "File Types. "
    2. Locate the .JS extension and click "Advanced. "
    3. Make sure the "Application to perform action" field contains: C:\WINDOWS\System\WScript.exe "%1" % (for Windows 98)

I don't think that's your problem, since I've UNassociated JS from wscript.exe (using Symantec's noscript.exe) and WindowsUpdate wasn't affected BUT, you could check by opening Windows Explorer or "My Computer" and looking for the JScript filetype in View, Folder Options. Filetypes. It would show up as extension: JS and "Opens with" Wscript. If you select the JScript Filetype and click the Edit button, select the Open action and click Edit again you will see C:\WINDOWS\System\WScript.exe as above.

Here is where I would start if I were you:
See if you have any of the programs running that are listed here.. if so, tell us which one(s):
