Probably a simple one - When I look in the control panel under sounds, the "Default sound" icon is missing. The list that you can assign sounds to goes from "Critical stop" to "Exclamation "
What this means is that if you use the tray icon to adjust the master volume, you get no confirmatory beep.
Presumably I could re-install Windows 98, but this seems a bit drastic - does anyone know where these settings are stored and can they be manually adjusted and edited?

    Thanks,

In Control Panel | Sounds, do you see a selection choice called "Sound Scheme "? If you do, select "Windows Default ". It may solve your problem.

    Thanks John,

This answered everything. I added two extra ".Default" keys to the registry as shown and it now works fine.
There was the solution that someone else also suggested about using windows set up to remove sounds and then re-install - I think this would also have worked.

    Thanks again,

    Rob
