My OS is Windows 98 1st Edition. How do I find out what version of the Dial-Up Networking [DUN] I now have? I don't know where the actual DUN file is so I can't check the version. I see at the Microsoft website there's a Win98 update for DUN--> version 1.4. I wonder if I might already have it.

And if find I want this update, will it change <during installation> any current settings in my DUN?

per ms, this upgrade was released two years ago in 2001.

the filename is dun14-98.exe. you can just search your hd for that.

or, the ms uninstall instructions for dun1.4 say to use the add/remove programs, so another way of checking if you have it is to see if it's listed there.

as for changing current dun settings, check the release notes , but it looks like if there's a prob, you can always go back via the above-mentioned add/remove, which will "restore Dial-up Networking files to the versions that originally shipped with Windows 98 ".

Nope, I don't have dun14-98.exe in my system. [My OS is Win98 First Edition.]

And in Add/Remove programs <in Control Panel> there's no entry at all for DUN, so I suppose I still have the older version and would want to install DUN 1.4. [But tell me, where is the actual DUN file I have now and what is the likely file name for it? I'd still like to know about my file and check the version.]

yes i read that you said you had w98 1st edition. and that's the dun executable for the 1st edition.

i have w98se on another partition, and i see i have dun1.4 on it, and that file is named dun14-se, and it's the set up file.

my suggestion is to search your hd for "dun ".

    You wrote:

To what are you referring when you use "that's" above? I don't understand at all. Please clarify what you're writing about.

Before I ever posted here about DUN, I did do a search for DUN on my HD. I find a bunch of DUN's but still don't know which is the one that actually connects me to the Internet. Here are the ones that turn up in a search:
    CPS.dun
    DPC.dun
    DXJ.dun
    EQT.dun
    FEN.dun
    FTE.dun
    FTT.dun
    INE.dun
    UUN.dun
All of these are in "C:\Windows\System\SBMktSol" (whatever that is).

Nothing else in the search is useful for understanding which file *is* the DUN that connects my computer to the Net.

And tell me what happens if I do install the latest version "dun14-98.exe ". Will my present settings for my DUN be preserved or lost? This is important for me to know.

You're settings will be fine, that is a reliable download. About the only visible difference you will see is the new option, Force 128 bit Encryption.

why don't you read the ms kb articles on the subject? that's the only way i could answer your questions, so it might as well be you doing the reading.

forex, i found a kb article on dun1.3

and i found release notes for 1.4, which i already quoted to you.

since you are obviously concerned about this upgrade messing up your settings, i'd say it is incumbent upon you to back up your system so that you can put things right back to the way they were should you not like what the upgrade did.

    don't you agree?

you do have a back up plan, right? do you use DriveImage? Ghost? something else?

and i noted to you that the kb article says you can use add/remove to return your settings if you don't like 1.4

and if i may make a suggestion, for the future, it is helpful if you first (not later) mention some of the things you have tried ( "Before I ever posted here about DUN, I did do a search for DUN on my HD ") so that others don't waste alot of time suggesting the same thing to you.
