    Wibdows XP Log On

I have just started using Windows XP Professional. Is there a way to by-pass the log-on area? I don't have to enter a password, but I always have to click that I am logging on in my name. I am the only one using the computer and it is not set up for anyone else.

    Hi Wayne,

Download TweakUI fron the M$ site (search for Powertoys for Win XP) - this enables you, amongst other things, to set up autologon.

    Log On in XP

Thanks for the reply, Pete. I downloaded TweakUI and changed the settings to "Auto LogOn." Rebooted three times and still get the Welcome screen where I have to click on my name to open XP. Another problem is that under my name to log on, it tells me I have 2 e-mail messages and there are no messages in my mail box. Is this a bug or what?

    Wayne,

I'm a bit lost on this one - I am running XP Pro + SP1 without the need to click my name on the welcome screen - it doesn't even appear when resuming from Standby. I am always logged in as Administrator as I guess you are as a single user. I don't have Autologon checked in TweakitUI either. Rather puzzling. .

You might check Display Properties > Screen Saver > Power > Advanced and make sure that the Prompt for Password .... box is unchecked.

I don't remember making any setting re logon when loading XP and I can find no options in Control Panel > User Accounts.

Have you searched the BBS for Log On in the XP Forum ?

If anything else comes to mind I'll come back, but for the moment regret I cannot be of further assistance. :(

Hopefully someone else will post back.

    XP Log On

Thanks again, Pete. I'm not sure what is happening either. I am running Windows XP - SP1 also. I went back to the Tweakui program and unchecked "Auto Logon." When I rebooted, everything is working without the Log On message. While looking around in the program I also found the place to remove the "Mail Waiting" message. Of course now that I don't have to see that screen, I guess it doesn't matter.
Looks like I am in pretty good shape for now. At least until I find another situation I'm not used to. Thanks again for the help. And thanks to the people who run this board. What a great service!:D

    Hi, Wayne ~

To get rid of those stupid e-mail notifications:
    • 'Start' > 'Run...' > type regedit > 'OK'
    • Navigate to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ UnreadMail
    • Click on the plus sign or arrow next to 'UnreadMail'
    • Right-click and 'Delete' the account immediately underneath and indented > 'Yes'
    • Close registry editor
To get rid of the 'Welcome' screen with autologon:
    • 'Start' > 'Run...' > type control userpasswords2 > 'OK'
    • 'Users' tab > clear the 'Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer'
    • 'Apply' > 'OK'
    • A dialog will appear that asks you what user name and password should be used to logon automatically
    • Just click 'OK'
    • Then > 'Control Panel' > 'User Accounts'
    • 'Change the way users log on or off'
    • Clear 'Use the Welcome Screen' and 'Use Fast User Switching'
    • 'Apply options' button > close > reboot

I also had the same request. Thanks to Bruce for an answer.

Interestingly, in my case the trick didn't take effect until I changed my user settings back to 'Use the welcome screen'.

Until then I just got a different, more basic logon screen.

    Cheers

    John.

Thanks to all who answered. It seems to be working now. I have saved all of the replies to a file and printed them off in case I have the problem again.
