I am using Windows XP. I have used Windows Update for a long time without problem. The problem is that I run Win Update and it completes saying no updates available, and to the left it lists Critical Updates (0), then greys out Windows, then lists Driver Updates (0).

My problem seems to have been an issue for Windows 98 and ME. It is described on the Microsoft site http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/#Other under the heading There are no updates available at this time message after running the scan and the "Windows" text is greyed out. The solution given, though, is for Windows 98 or ME installs. My XP install does not have a VersionNumber key.

One little additional fact which may or may not have bearing. The last time I ran Windows Update successfully, I was logged onto my machine as a different account (I am an admin in both cases). For various reasons I had to create a new account to access a new domain server.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Problem Solved

I do not know why this solved the problem, but here is what I did:

Restarted update. Clicked on Personalize Windows Update. Checked the box for displaying link to Windows Update Catalog and clicked Save Settings.

    The next scan worked fine.
